Need to make vegan toffee apples

Obviously not using butter and the friends we have coming don't even use vegan margarine as they are vertually fat free vegans!

I was thinking of using spun sugar recipe which is just sugar and water. Before I give this a go, do you think the toffee would be too hard? I don't want to be responible for broken teeth!

It might be - is there a veg oil that heats to a high temp?

Well I've never made toffee apples, but I often make a banana and caramel trifle, that I decorate with shards made from just sugar and water.

They aren't too hard, not even for my grandmother who wears dentures, and there's usually a fight over the pieces that didn't go on the trifle.

LetThereBeRock thanks for that, I may just give it a go now as can't really think of an alternative. No broken teeth I hope.

Well if it's too hard, though it shouldn't be,if you don't put too many layers on it,you could just coat the apples in dark chocolate, then in sprinkles or nuts.

Many brands of dark chocolate are suitable for vegans. You just have to check the ingredients list carefully,or look up suitable brands.

Green and Blacks used to be,but then for some reason they decided to add milk powder.Hmm

Carob is vegan.

Actually I'm sure the red candy apples that are sold in supermarkets are coated in exactly that, and not caramel or toffee.

LetThereBeRock · 20/10/2010 00:01

And by exactly that I mean the sugar and water solution.

here

Sugar, water, apples, food colour, cream of tartar

I don't have a recipe for vegan toffee apples but I do have a recipe for vegan chocolate cupcakes, would that be any help to you? I can post it here if you would like it.

MoonFaceMamaaaaargh · 22/10/2010 19:55

Was going to say that adding vinigar makes the toffee less hard iirc...but think cream of tartar Zach mentions would do same thing...both are acid so something chemical at work me thinks?
