Yesterday we butchered two pigs at home. It was brilliant

We made sausages and salami. We had chops, tenderloin, ham, hocks, roasting joints - absolutely vast amounts of meat. We won't have to buy meat for at least six months.

We cure the bacon later and finish packing the sausages. The salami looks brilliant hanging in the shed.

I am so pleased Smile

We do it all again on Sunday, two more pigs are being slaughtered and we butcher them on Friday.

I feel Hugh FW would be very proud Grin

So entire species of animals would 'diminish' i.e become extinct, but that's ok is it?

BoojaB · 09/10/2010 22:06

Just noticed this in the news. Very topical!

BoojaB · 09/10/2010 22:08

peggotty you think it's more humane to keep them alive to kill them, and to kill the planet in the process in order to keep them alive?

Aren't the Tamworth One(Two) killing the planet then? Presumably the longer a pig lives the more damage it's doing. If the logic of your argument is followed then they should have been slaughtered as soon as they were recaptured rather than being kep alive?

BoojaB · 09/10/2010 22:16

It's not just about the environment though (although that is a MASSIVE argument against eating animals, of course), it's about inflicting unnecessary pain too. Meat-eating is just selfish - "I do it because I like the taste and sod the consequences". Dress it up how you like, but it's basic - killing for pleasure is wrong.

BoojaB · 09/10/2010 22:18

MissBeehiving, they shouldn't have existed in the first place!

MissBeehiving · 09/10/2010 22:19

In that case you need to stop eating honey, eggs and dairy products too to ensure that your conscience is clear.

BoojaB · 09/10/2010 22:20

I stopped eating those things many years ago!

I haven't had chance to read through all the posts, but here's my two pence.

I am a vegetarian. Not a militant one, but a passionate one all the same.

Do I think what the OP did was impressive or something to be proud of? No, certainly not. It makes me feel sick that someone would actually use the word 'brilliant' for the act of killing an animal.

But my general perspective on people who eat meat are that they should not do so unless they are fully willing to understand and justify the killing and butchering of an animal. I personally do not believe it can be justified, and from the posts I have seen on here, not a single reason has been given that comes close to making me change my mind. But that's my choice and my stance.

The title of this thread is horrible. But at least the OP isn't a hypocrite.

MissBeehiving · 09/10/2010 22:22

Well, you're certainly committed, if a little misguided. Grin

peggotty · 09/10/2010 22:22

She's vegan Missbeehiving so she can be one step up on her high horse Grin. Surely horses should be allowed to 'diminish' as well?! All that farting and crapping that they do, there must be a hole in the ozone layer that is purely equine?

ravenAK · 09/10/2010 22:23

But BoojaB, killing to eat is how most omniverous animals function.

As a species, we eat far too much meat & we often treat the animals we eat horrifically.

To me, this is a good example of meat-eating - the animal has been reared in better conditions than its wild ancestors, it's been killed humanely, & the meat is being processed efficiently, with no waste, & not rendered into disgusting 're-formed' products.

As an habitual non meat eater, I'd be happy to eat it (although Humphrey & I had better stay off discussing politics as we munch our pork sandwiches...Grin)

BoojaB · 09/10/2010 22:26

Yes, I'm on a mythical horse. Could you please polish my boots while you're down there, peg? Grin

peggotty · 09/10/2010 22:29

ooooh like Pegasus - cool! And you'd be even higher above us pox and boil-ridden meat-eaters

BoojaB · 09/10/2010 22:30

raven, but we're not naturally omniverous (I posted about this briefly earlier) and we don't need to do it at all.

BoojaB · 09/10/2010 22:33

Pox and boils, peg? Heart disease, gallstones and swine flu would be more appropriate.

Tippychoocks · 09/10/2010 22:36

I've been veggie almost all my life and farming or smallholding for much of it too. In my mind the two can go together asd I'm taking responsibility for the animal products I do use (goats milk, butter and cheese mostly) and supplying a fraction of the meat market - which is never going to go away - with well bred, well reared and well killed meat products. And obviously pretty eggs and happy vegetables Grin

Well done OP Smile, it's obviously something you care about and have done with dignity and respect for the animals.

peggotty · 09/10/2010 22:36

I'm from the West of Scotland, Booja, I have heart disease written into my genetic code; I was probably born with high cholesterol. Anyway, I'm off to bed, I will try not to expire from carnivoritis overnight Smile.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/10/2010 22:39

HC - I think you are really cool :)

BoojaB · 09/10/2010 22:39

Woah, Pegasus. It's time for bed for us too.

Actually, I'm too frightened to move, but that's for another thread. Why do weird things always happen when DP's away?!

HumphreyCobbler · 09/10/2010 22:39

thanks

I am getting stressed now and need to calm down!

Sorry Humphrey

It should have been taken to another thread.
