Anyone had a chocolate cake made with beetroot?

Hi all,
I've seen recipes before for a chocolate and beetroot cake and it always said how delicious and moist they were (but they would wouldn't they, not gonna say it tastes weird and crap!).
Are they nice? Is there a recipe you can recommend?
It's ds's 3rd birthday next month and he wants a Ben 10 cake. The pics I've seen of the cake make it look very dark, almost black. I'm thinking of making very very bright green butter icing to make it look like the Ben 10 colours (black and illuminous green for you none Ben 10 fans out there!). I thought it would look quite effective when cut.

Any advice on making illuminous green butter icing would also be great. The green colouring I've got would just go too dark if I added more, can you get illuminous food colouring?

Haven't even thought about how to decorate it yet (that will be a whole new thread!)

Thanks
x

I tasted a lovely one the other day. I really dislike beetroot but in a chocolate cake it was heaven!

I haven't got a recipe but I do think it is worth giving it a go.

It's lovely.
DOn't mention the beetroot and nobody need ever know.

Tis very nice. And it counts towards your 5-a-day.Hmm
Just make sure that you don't use pickled beetroot!Grin

Its OK, have had it a few times. I personally prefer chocolate cake without it. TBH, I think I would just do a normal chocolate cake and add black colouring paste into the mix before baking.

For the green icing, I'd get sugarpaste which is basically ready made icing you just roll out.

Here's a place I use that sells both.

I made chocolate beetroot brownies a while ago and they were amazing. Very moist and not veg-flavoured at all. In fact they were too amazing, DH and I ate the lot Blush

sugarlake · 06/10/2010 13:27

recipe here It is lovely.

boogiewoogie · 06/10/2010 19:41

Yes, it's very moist and no you cannot tell there's beetroot in it.

I recently made chocolate courgette cake. DS who loathes courgette normally absolutely adores the cake. Told him after he ate it.

This is the recipe I used.I made mine in a large loaf tin with chocolate chips in the mixture and on top.

SecretNutellaFix · 06/10/2010 19:44

curly- what would happen if you added yello colouring to the green? would that brighten the shade?

PlanetEarth · 06/10/2010 20:09

I've made one, lovely and rich Smile.

ihearthuckabees · 06/10/2010 20:23

I've made one - I'd say the texture was a little bit different, and all the kids eating mine guessed that it wasn't a 'normal' cake, but couldn't tell me what was in it. They scoffed it, enjoyed it, then when I told them it had beetroot in it, they all went 'yuck'! Grin

Doodleydoo · 06/10/2010 20:26

what about this? not beetroot......

DancingThroughLife · 06/10/2010 20:32

I hate beetroot, had it in a chocolate cake at a friend's DS's birthday party and was very pleasantly surprised.

Also courgette and lemon cake. Yum!

Now I just need to get the recipes. Chocolate Beetroot cake must surely count towards your 5 a day Smile

Curlybrunette · 06/10/2010 21:47

Thanks you've all been great.
Doodleydoo that looks delicious. I think the best thing all round would be for me to make a choc and beetroot and a choc and courgette and do a taste test. In fact I'd better have 2 or 3 slices over the course of the day to get a full picture. Oh and a normal chocolate cake as a control...Wink

senua - lol at pickled beetroot!

taffetacat - this website is ace, the green icing looks the perfect colour and they sell green sparkles which would be great to decorate with.

sugarlake - thanks a lot, I'll print the recipe out. Quick question how should I cook the beetroot. I don't really use it, did a recipe once where I roasted it for an hour or so. Should i roast it or boil it? Does it matter?

boogiewoogie - mmmm extra choc chips, might add those anyway

x
