Pickled pears - have you ever made them?

Have several recipes for pickled pears, quite fancy making some for us to use at Christmas and possibly to use as part of a gift. But what are they like? I can quite like the sound of them with cold cuts etc, but would like to hear whether anyone else has tried them - if the majority of people hate them, will just make them for us to try and sack the idea of giving any away....

I don't think I've made pickled pears but I have done lots of pickled fruit: damsons, plums, quince and blackberries.

I love them generally, they're quite chutneyish in flavour iyswim. My personal favourite is pickled damsons. imho they need a long maturation period - 6 months at least. That may be a problem if they're Christmas presents.

I've a good, simple recipe for pickled peaches if you're interested?

yes, I made pickled pears a few years back, an Angela Hartnett recipe. They were nice but not amazing. My mum used to make spiced peaches every year, and I am not so keen on them. Pickled pears are very good with blue cheese, IMO.

thanks all ...I've got a Delia recipe and a Good Food recipe - might give it a go. Shodatin, always up for new recipes, would be interested in the peaches - but only when you have the time, not urgent. And I'm sure lots of others will be interested. Yeah, 6 months a bit long ProfYaffle, have you ever tried them after a couple of months to know what they're like?

A bit vinegary! The vinegar mellows to a really smooth, rich, almost alcoholic taste in the end.

alcoholic eh - sold!

Just had fourth attempt at posting pickled peach recipe on Mumsnet recipe list under Jams, Chutneys etc.
Glad there is no hurry as I'm new to laptop
and hunted unsuccessfully for way to change from "draft" to "submit" or similar and kept deleting the lot every time- v. frustrating.
