Red velvet cupcake question...

Can I ice them with plain vanilla buttercream instead of cream cheese icing?

I have never made them before so don't know what they are meant to taste like Smile

Thanks!

Yes, you can but they won't be quite so luxurious! Also the cream cheese has a tangy-ness that really compliments the cake (and the frosting will be whiter - buttercream can be a bit yellow) but if you use the vanilla buttercream they might seem a bit too sweet, IYKWIM.

What the hell, they'll be delicious whatever you use Grin

Thank you - I'm too lazy to go out and buy cream cheese so will try plain old vanilla Thanks

Enjoy - they are strangely addictive. My DH is a big fan, so I now make them regularly. Aldi v cheap for cream cheese so I often do a cream cheese icing/frosting for sponges too.

lurking to find out what red velvet cupcakes are - they sound delish!

Maud they are chocolatey cupcakes (cocoa added) with red food colouring. they usually have a cream cheese topping.

they are very sweet but very delicious. mmmmm

What mama said! I've got the Hummingbird Bakery Cookbook which has a fab recipe - haven't got time to type it out now but here is a similar recipe (which going back to the OP actually uses vanilla frosting). Enjoy Smile
