Fresh Mackerel - very quick answers needed please!

Bought 2 fresh mackerel from fish counter on Sat. Got them to remove heads, but otherwise whole. Just put them under the grill, but one feels firm (as I'd expected) and other feels all floppy. Is this ok, or does this mean that the floppy one is bad? Both seem to smell ok I think.

Grilling now - so you only have a few mins to answer before I need to eat or bin!

Thanks!

Don't know the answer but the only time I came close to throwing up when pg with ds1 was when I was too tired to do dinner and left dh to grill the mackerel. he didn't cook them enough and we both spent the night feeling really ill. Have never eaten them since. If I were you, I would find out for sure before eating.

But how, that's the question! Please let some lovely mumsnetter know the answer

Could you ring Tesco or somewhere with a fish counter (whether or not you got it there) and ask them? I expect you are eating it now though are you?

Thanks lonelymum - decided that you're right - it's just not worth the risk when I'm pregnant, so am eating the firm one, but not the floppy one, whose flesh seemed all floppy and disintegratey (not really a word I know!) when cooked.

Leave the heads on next time. they're fresh as long as the eyes are clear. going a bit off as the eyes go cloudy.

Thanks NightyNight - will bear that one in mind for future.

Oily fish can stand rough treatment and hanging around better than non oily. As long as they're both well cooked should be fine, but as you're pg,veer on the safe side.
