Is this an impossible task? Easy but impressive birthday cake?

I need to make a birthday cake for mum's 60th at the weekend. I'll have a couple of spare hours tomorrow and a couple on Friday. It needs to be able to travel. There are only 6 of us, so doesn't need to be enormous. Mum is a lovely baker, I'm adequate, if that. Not that I'm in competition or anything, would just like to do her something special she wouldn't make herself. I've got visions of a sweet covered chocolate concoction that I saw in a bakery window once, but any other ideas gratefully considered.

This!

I think that looks really striking for a cake, simple, but not just your bog standard sponge with icing. Might even make it myself just for the hell of it Grin

Perfect! She loves Horlicks and we have a family tradition of giving maltesers. Thank you so much!

Just to let you know, it was a great cake and very much appreciated! I didn't do the half malteser thing with the decoration as it needed to travel, but did cover it totally in complete maltesers. I had to make it twice - didn't cook the first one long enough. It needed an extra 10 minutes really. However, first attempt made a lovely pudding !
