I am wondering if I am making this all wrong. It is how I always have done it but it seems to take a long time.

Brown the meat, add onions, mushrooms, tinned tomatoes, etc and simmer for 20 minutes.

Put in dish, top with mash and then put in oven to heat right through and crisp up which takes another 20 minutes.

Your recipe is slightly different to mine but thats about right in terms of time I think. Mine is brown lamb over high heat, remove, leaving a tablespoon of the fat draining away the rest. Fry chopped onion, carrot and celery for 10 mins until sift then add cooked lamb, a teaspoon of tomato puree a dash of worcester, a bay leaf and 100ml of veg or chickken stock. Simmer for 10 mins.

Mash potatoes, put on top of minced lamb mix in dish and put in hot oven for 20 mins or so.

I forgot the tomato puree but hopefully no one will notice.
