what do i do with this air lock thingy?

It's one of the ones that is like a set of cylenders (sp) that fit inside each other. Obviously i've shoved it in the demi-john, but should the two halves be clicked together or not? Do i do anything else to it?

Put some cooled boiled water in the bottom half and then put the top on so that the 'cap' on the top bit sort of clicks down on to the top of the bottom bit.

You can also fill the bottom bit with a solution of campden tablet in water, or other sterilising solution.

thank you very much! Also one of the demi-joins is only about a third full. Can i make up some more to fill it up? I've used a john seymore recipie and he seemed to leave half the instructions out so it's all a bit blagged any way!
