Is it normal for an 8 mo old to vomit on EVERY finger food?!

My DS has always been a bit sicky but he now vomits at least once a day- various triggers or sometimes no trigger at all.

We are seeing a dietician as he has a milk allergy. She put on big pressure today about the fact he should be having finger foods and how important it is for speech development etc. We would LOVE him to have lots of finger foods but every time it's offered, he seems to chew ok but then gag and vomit when he tries to swallow.

My DH insists this is probably normal but I am at my wits end . Has anyone been through this? IS IT REALLY NORMAL?!

Thanks for any responses in advance x

We also had a similar problem with our ds. He could only cope with finger foods if they were in very small pieces e.g. toast cut into tiny cubes. We eventually took him to the doctors who checked his throat and told us to keep persevering gragually making things larger. Ds is now 14 months and taking a variety of finger foods and no longer gags and throws up. So have hope it is normal.

We also had a gagger, ds had alot of trouble with anything that wasnt mush (now he wont eat anything that isnt finger food) We had some great advice which worked for us...

Serve a little bits of food of different textures at each meal, eg a little puree, a little mashed and very soft finger food

Allow baby to play with food on highchair to discover its texture and shape so that he will learn what he needs to do with his tongue and mouth to successfully manage it

Try not to stress, watch baby carefully and start with very soft textures such as very ripe pear (ds used to get frustrated as it was so ripe it would fall apart in his hand)

It does slowly get better, my ds just seemed to click one day that he needed to chew and swallow and as I say I now cant get him to take anything off a spoon, he is 1 and still gags very occasionally but got much better using the above tips by about 10mths.

Good luck
