I know there are loads of sites out there on the internet but I would appreciate some recommendations on the best slow cooker recipes/tips.

Marvellous thread - I think I may buy one with my birthday money! Anything to make life easier. now any suggestions on the best slow cooker? Is the Asda one any good?

TeaOneSugar · 22/09/2010 19:29

Can I ask a daft question (I'm veggie so I'm allowed to be dim about meat Smile).

For the gammon in coke recipe, do I take off the rind/fat first, or just bung it all in?

seaturtle · 23/09/2010 01:12

Deemented - thanks for the link to the great blog. Only had mine for a less than a week and I'm already hooked!

deemented · 23/09/2010 07:06

Tea - i'm not sure tbh, but i think i'd be tempted to remove it.

That blogs been linked to lots on here - as much as i love my SC i'm not sure i could use it every single day for a year... i use it maybe three or four times a week atm...

TeaOneSugar · 23/09/2010 07:50

OK, I'll maybe have a look what Nigella does, but I think rind/fat off sounds good.

NormaSknockers · 23/09/2010 15:07

I love the blog, some fab recipes on it!

Tea I removed the fat off my beef joint & it was a disaster so I'd double check what Nigella says Grin

I can't decide what to make in mine tomorrow, could do pork casserole, or sweet & sour pork maybe. Have got pork chops too.....hhhmmm...

BumptiousandBustly · 24/09/2010 07:15

I did pork belly last night, just browned it and shoved it in, absolutely amazing, so soft and delicious!

deemented · 24/09/2010 07:45

I'm doing a spag bol again in mine later - i have my best friend coming to stay for a few days but she isn't getting here til late, so will put it in about 2ish...

OnlyWantsOne · 24/09/2010 08:03

Im going to Argos to buy one - do I get 6.5 cook works one or the russel hobbs 3.5 l one -

do you have to fill them up? Or can use half capacity??

deemented · 24/09/2010 08:08

Honestly? Both Grin

It all depends on how many people you're planning on feeding, if you want leftovers to freeze, if you want one big enough to do joints/whole chickens ect...

OnlyWantsOne · 24/09/2010 09:26

can I not just use my cast iron casserole dish and the oven timer? Or is this not the same (DP just suggested this thats all)

and what would you recomend be my first meal to cook in it?

Yes left overs are fab, why cook every day when u can cook every other or freeze left overs? So 6.5l would be best - prob just want to know what would be better quality etc?

I have never had a slow cooker before!!!!

deemented · 24/09/2010 09:37

Well, i suppose you could... but imo it's not the same at all.

As for first meal... well, what do you like? Stews or casseroles are always good, as are curries or a spag bol sauce.

TBH i had a 3.5l one and i used it for ages. I now have a 6.5l one too and i'm not as keen on it, but it's probably because i'm just not used to it yet, iyswim? The bigger one is great for doing whole chickens in though, something i couldn't do in the little one.

OnlyWantsOne · 24/09/2010 09:45

ooo I do whole chickens in my casserole pot but its not quite big enough and with ht elid on the skin catches and burns and I cant get much veg in it, will just get the 6.5l one for 20!! It doesnt have to be filled up does it?

we love stews, caseroles etc but i would never leave my bloodyoven on for 8 hours while at work, so dont have them during the week

Expecting 2nd baby, only having 6 weeks mat leave, need this in my life dont i!!??

shelley1977 · 24/09/2010 12:01

frazzledblob · 24/09/2010 12:12

Would second getting a 3.5l and a 6.5l Grin

My 6.5l is on with a beef stew for the meat eaters.

For me, I am planning on doing my first cake in the 3.5l. I will report back later with the results.

Deemented Thanks for posting the link to the blog. I am going to try and pick up another small SC soon to try the candles.

lizziemun · 24/09/2010 13:03

I made a very yummy tomato/sausage pasta in mine tonight - yum, yum, yum!

deemented · 24/09/2010 19:39

Ok, my favoritest sc recipe...

Curry Pork.

2 pork steaks or chops per person
1 onion, chopped
tin of toms
tin of beans
few tablespoons of curry powder mixed with half a cup of water

(if making in a 6.5l sc double up on the onion, toms and beans)

Cook on low for 6-8 hours. Serve with mash and crusty bread.

OnlyWantsOne · 24/09/2010 19:46

when you say tin of beans do u mean baked beans?

chimchar · 24/09/2010 20:03

Just going to dish up my cheating curry now. Been on since lunchtime.

Diced chicken breast
1 pepper
2 onions
handful sultanas
tsp cumin
jar of sainsbo korma sauce
1/2 cup water

just tasted. Om nom nom. Grin

NormaSknockers · 24/09/2010 20:17

I second that question Only Grin

8 sausages (browned)
2 tins of chopped toms
3 gloves of garlic (crushed)
1 courgette (cut in ribbons using a peeler)
150g pasta

Chop the sausages into chunks & put in the SC with the toms & garlic on low for 6 hours. In the last half an hour add the courgette & pasta (make sure the pasta is well mixed in) - yum, yum, yum Grin

LargeGlassofRed · 24/09/2010 20:23

ooooh getting one tomorrow!

Can I ask a couple of questions?

first what size will I need for 5 dc's and 2 adults? will 6.5 be big enough?

also the Gammon in coke can I use diet coke?
Thanks

NormaSknockers · 24/09/2010 20:28

Large I have a 3.5 & that feeds 4 of us with some left over & the 6.5 one I saw looked pretty big, you could always get one big one small?

With the gammon I'm certain I read it had to be full fat coke.
