Or should I go get paella rice (40 mins away to shop)

I usually use long grain rice no problem. I do hope that you've eaten by now though, it's a long time since you posted :(

I found a recipe for paella a couple of weeks ago that said to use long grain rice and I thought it odd so got a bag of paella rice. Was lush. First time I'd made it.

Paella rice or risotto rice is better but I wouldn't do a 40 minute journey for a packet of rice.

Ended up going to local deli and getting risotto rice. Was lovely. Though I used saffron - it didn't really make it very yellow or add to the flavour - will get yellow food colour for next time.

Unf. got chorizo from butchers and it turned out to be v. spicy - so the kids didn't eat much of it.

I use turmeric for the yellow colouring. Is tasteless.

I usually use turmeric too. A little goes a long way and it's MUCH cheaper than saffron.

I put a tiny pinch of saffron filaments (strands? is that what they're called?) into a little warm water and allow it to steep for a while, releasing the pigment. It colours the rice, and adds a little flavour too, ime.
