How do I make chocolate icing?

I have made fairy cakes and want to do some sort of chocolate topping.

Not buttercream like cupcakes have though (I can make that!), just like chocolate icing. I don't think that just melted chocolate would work though would it?

I have chocolate, icing sugar, butter, sugar, cocoa powder etc.

Cheers!

Melt the chocolate, add to mixed icing sugar, butter and milk. It makes a kind of fudge like topping.

I generally either do choc buttercream or just melted choc, but I'm sure someone more clever will come along.

or mix cocoa powder, icing sugar and water for a glace icing. (think french fancy)

Chocolate ganache is lovely - melt chocolate, stir in cream. Wonderful stuff.

Thanks.

I was worried that just melted choc would be weird on the cakes but if that works thats fine by me!

Urgh sorry, mine should be other way round - stir choc into warm cream until melted. It goes nice and creamy. Will search for a recipe now. If I remember correctly, it was half a cup of cream with around 250g dark choc (ish).

I don't have cream - thank you for the suggestion though!!

whoops, sorry maize! i fancy some now, but don't have cake...

Melt 150g plain chocolate with 65g butter. Either pour it over cake when it makes a sort of peelable covering or whisk until slightly paler - more milk chocolate coloured - when it can be spread with a palette knife, rather like a frosting.

this ganache is lovely after it's been in the fridge (on top of the cake)
