What is your favourite Porridge flavouring?

I am trying to get my DS's more interested in food, in a hoe they might eat it.
We have a family love of Porridge and i have said to the Ds's we can try a new flavour each day to see which ones we all like.

We have had Cinnamon and Sultana today..

Can anyone help me think of more toppings or flavourings for our Porridge in the mornings, i really want to keep it up as its the only thing i have found that they will eat and i am a firm believer that a warm full stomach starts the day off right. Smile

DS's absolute favourite is porridge with banana chopped through it, but he also loves raisins or sultanas.

Personally brown sugar or golden syrup are my absolute favourites but DS hasn't yet realised such things exist Grin. He's 3, how much longer do you reckon I've got?!

Otherwise any sort of stewed fruit/berries go well with oats. :)

EssieW · 02/09/2010 10:27

Golden syrup although I've recently been tempted by maple syrup.

Stewed apple is our latest favourite though

whatagradeA · 02/09/2010 14:32

Apple or pear grated in are nice (less work than stewing but not chunky like chopped!) with a spinkle of cinnamon.

Tinned peaches (or fresh if you have them)

Or my personal favourite, brown sugar - but the children don't know about that one yet!

I love stirring in a tbs or two of peanut butter and some raisins. Honestly it's georgeous.

Also:
cinnamon and raisin
cinnamon and grated apple or dried apple pieces
Ground almonds stirred in and topped with honey
Frozen berries cooked in to it for the last minute or so, topped with greek yoghurt and honey
Crystalised ginger chopped up finely
sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and dried apricots
Apricot jam and greek yoghurt
greek yoghurt, slivered almonds and honey
Peanut butter and banana
banana and walnuts
banana and nutella Grin

Maple syrup

Lizzieloubee · 03/09/2010 13:44

Golden syrup or stewed apple for me

bruxeur · 03/09/2010 13:46

Salt.

Southern jessies.

chocolatefroggie · 03/09/2010 13:55

I second salt

They used to serve chocolate porridge at boarding school, it was disgusting because they would just sieve a tiny amount of plain cocoa into it so it was brown but not chocolatey -bleh

Apple sauce is tasty especially with cinnamon.

BikeRunSki · 03/09/2010 13:55

Banana
Grated apple
Stwed apple
Cinnamon and honey
Apricots - dried, tinned or fresh
Blueberries - dried or fresh
Cranberries - ditto
Strawberries -ditto
Walnuts and honey

seeker · 03/09/2010 13:58

Salt . And cream. Yum.

Kipper?

TitsalinaBumSquash · 03/09/2010 14:00

I do add a pinch of Salt, it tastes rank without but we like a topping to go with, the kids have mad a chart with Mummy, DS1 and DS2 columns and then Porridge in another and we must add a Smile or Sad depending on what we think of each flavour. Grin

Raisins and maple syrup

Smash09 · 03/09/2010 15:52

Would they try any savoury toppings?

I think you can do grated cheese or a spoon of cream cheese and some salsa on top. I've never had it though - I prefer something a bit sweeter in the mornings!

Smash09 · 03/09/2010 15:53

Oh and I forgot - chopped dried figs and some pumpkin seeds are lovely, good crunch.

MoonFaceMama · 03/09/2010 19:01

Shock what's with all the "golden syrup" people? Shock

It's treacle. TREACLE! Ffs.

Shock
scottishmummy · 03/09/2010 19:10

Wiggletastic · 03/09/2010 19:19

errr.... porridge flavoured porridge please

Made with salt, sprinkle of sugar on top and the cream off the top of the milk (if only such a thing existed anymore Sad)

picc · 03/09/2010 19:37

treacle or brown sugar mmmmmm..... :)

NorbertDentressangle · 03/09/2010 19:39

Chopped dates and walnuts for me.

The DCs like chopped dried apricots or a sprinkle of dark brown sugar

MollysChambers · 03/09/2010 19:41

Oi! Don't mess with the porridge. Salt and a splash of milk on top. Anything else is illegal.
