Is bab rice the same as rice flour

Have just tried a sugar free biscuit receipe and DS loved them. They use only sr flour, baby rice and apple juice).
Now I have finished off my baby rice, I was thinking about using rice flour instead. I can get about 10 times the amount for the same price.
As far as I can work out, they are both just rice, but are they processed differently or are they the same thing with different names?

Hmm....not sure, but rice flour might be more finely milled.

I have never cooked with rice flour. Do you think that this would affect the end result much?

Two types of rice flour - cooked and uncooked. You can get both at Chinese supermarkets. Not sure what typeyou get in other supermarkets. Presumably baby rice is makde with cooked rice?

Baby rice tends to be fortified with vitamins. I think rice flour is nutritionally not a very useful substance.
(Some would say the same of baby rice but added to fruit and veg it is GREAT and I will hard stare anyone who says different Grin)

Just the idea of the 'hard stare' is making me smile. But as it is for biscuits which seem to serve the purpose of teething aid rather than 'real' food, I am not too worried.

Have to admit, I don't know if I am any more sure about anything after this. Although, Uptoapointlordcooper, I had never even thought about the cooked/uncooked thing. I will look into that one further - perhaps I will find the answer I seek there.

Reputable source says it's raw. I think I would try it. If it doesn't work you can always use the remainder to do savoury steamed pumpkin cake - easy and yummy and sugar-free.

I've never cooked with cooked rice flour so don't know what it's like!

I will also hard-stare anyone who disses rice.

I remember being on MN when ds was a year-ish old and nobody would have it that baby rice is even food. Apparently it was the devil's glue. I forget why but it was to do with baby led weaning

I use rice flour in certain biscuits and shortbreads. It gives a kind of sandy texture.

UptoapointLordCopper · 01/09/2010 22:15

Rice is good. And nobody is allergic to rice. Great stuff for catering to large groups of people with different dietary requirements. Pah to rice-dissers.

I did shortbread with corn flour (Jane Asher's recipe) but it tasted of corn flour. Hmm Will try rice flour next time.

semolina also good in shortbread copper
