Vitamin supplements / cod liver oil

A friend was asking me earlier for my views on these and I really didn't have one. My DS has a very good balanced diet and I don't think its necessary for him - he eats everything on his or anyone else's plate.

Her 2 DS (4 and 10) are very different - they don't have a varied diet and very little fruit/veg passes their lips without protest.

I really don't know the pros and cons of supplements in these circumstances - can anyone help out? She was especially interested re cod liver oil as she has heard that it can help with concentration?

Any views greatly appreciated!

My kids have taken cod liver oil since they were little. It helps with concentration, memory, and also keep insulin levels in the body steady. Adults are recommended to take cod liver oil against depression, for stiff joints, and for concentration and memory. It helps with the brain chemistry, and it is also recommended for children with adhd, it calms them.

Unless your ds eats fatty fish (such as salmon, mackerell and fresh tuna steak) 2-3 days per week, he will quite possibly also benefit. It does not need to be for dinner, a wholemeal sandwich with mackerel in tomato sauce, or smoked salmon for lunch also counts.

Thanks - we are good with oily fish. Do you think that supplementing with cod liver oil do any harm for my DS? I will pass this on to my friend -thank you for replying!

I dont think it will do any harm, most capsules I have seen say "2-3 per day", and if you are concerned you may chose to just give him 1.

Unless you also give multivitamins which contain A and D vitamins. There is plenty of A and D vitamins naturally in cod liver oil.

If your ds has a good and healthy diet with plenty of fruit, veg, fish, etc, I would rather skip the multivitamins and give the cod liver oil.
