Serious question. I am being given one tomorrow from my aunty's allotment and have never in my life cooked one or heard of any recipes for one.

Stuff it. Google stuffed marrow recipes and find one you like the sound of. I cooked one for the first time last week (donated half to my friend's mum, ready stuffed for her to pop in the oven. It was lovely.

Just take it around to the local shows with produce competitions, win a couple of quid for largest/heaviest marrow, and use the money to buy something edible. Grin

So cruel Greensleeves.

Marrow and ginger jam?

Or hollow it out and use it as a cot!

ShatnersBassoon · 23/08/2010 13:49

I'd make a marrow costume for a small child with it. It will only last for one party, and will cause some staining to undergarments, but I imagine it would look fantastic.

Affix eyes and teeth to create a crocodile.
Position Marrow Crocodile at the door to keep chuggers at bay.

ShatnersBassoon - what sort of social circles do you circulate in, where a marrow costume for a small child would be immediately useful?

I don't think I have any social occasions upcoming where a child in a marrow costume would not raise the odd eyebrow! Grin

I'd be temped to go down the craft route too. Seriously, you don't want to eat it. The bigger they get, the more grim they taste. And they don't really taste of anything to start with!

But maybe you could try marrow rum?!

Supercherry · 23/08/2010 14:02

Gagamama, now that's an idea I like!

cruel?!?! Are you serious?

Supercherry · 23/08/2010 14:05

Very serious- I'm one of those people that only consume things that fall off trees Grin

Don't eat it, when they are that big they are vile (they can be bittr anyway, but are a lot worse when they are huGE).

Make a hole at one end, hoist it on your washing line, give your kids wooden spoons and let 'em bash it like a pinata.

ShatnersBassoon · 23/08/2010 14:06

Oh yes, eyebrows would meet hairlines. Why go to a fancy dress party as a Disney princess when you could go as an oversized squash?

Marrow is the dullest veg to eat, so don't punish yourselves by going down that route.

you lot are mental! marrows are just adult courgettes! They are great at taking on the flavour of stock or gravy. make sure you peel, remove seeds and pith. chop as small or large as you like. nice in chicken soup (clear soup), also good in stew, curry, can cook for a long time. can also grate or dice finely add to shepherds pies, etc. just add a little at first if your're not sure.
p.s. best value veg in supermarket.

stressedHEmum · 31/08/2010 21:03

You could make spicy marrow chutney, marrow jam, creamy marrow crumble, stuffed marrow rings, breaded marrow rings, marrow and tomato bake or you can do what fanta says and add it to other things to boost the veg content.

taffetacat · 31/08/2010 21:20

Treat it like an overripe aubergine. Cut out all the seedy stuff in the middle, cut into small chunks put in a colander over a large dish and then salt. Leave for at least 30 mins then drain away juice. Roast, tossed in olive oil in a low to medium oven for 45 mins - 1 hour.

This concentrates the flavour to make it taste more like courgette. Then use as you would any courgette eg pasta sauce, ratatouille, whatever.

MumsieNonna · 01/09/2010 13:44

Save it for Halloween then compost it. Grin Actually ginger and marrow jam is quite nice

amistillsexy · 11/09/2010 10:31

Hollow it out and use it as a boat...go fishing in it and catch your own supper!
