sorry am sure this is a daft question. but mine says best before 2008 and am loathe to throw out

Is it bone dry? ok if so.
I do check for tiny creepy crawlies in old flour if it was unsealed.

i agree so long as its dry, looks ok and no crawly creatures, id just use it
