do you "pep up" ready meals?

dh and I had a discussion - he likes the ready meals as they come, cooked per instruction on the pack.
I never take them as they are, always add fresh herbs, spices, extra veg on frozen pizza, garlic in pasta sauce etc.
do you do that as well?

not that we have ready meals all the time...

We don't have ready meals per se but yes like you i would add extra veg to frozen pizza, extra herbs to a jar of pasta sauce, etc. I guess its down to personal taste. My mum is the opposite though and thinks that anyhting coming out of a packet shouldn't be altered by human hand in any way.

I'm sure the tase is much better because you feel more like a homemade meal, right? The taste is more familiar so this way you may start to believe that you actually cooked it! :) :o

Always. I also don't do a lot of ready meals but when we do, I almost always pep it up. I only buy margarita pizzas and add all my own toppings when we have pizza.

I also use curry pastes when I make curry and always add additional spices for the fresh fragrance and flavour they give.

I always have to add something...even it's as small as adding extra spices or cheese.

Isn't the point of a ready meal that you just whack it in the oven? If I'm having a rm it's because I have 30 seconds allocated for dinner and no time to do anything else.

AlgebraRocksMySocks · 20/08/2010 09:48

we don't use them a lot, and TBH I can't be arsed to do any 'pepping' - kind of takes away the fact that it's a ready meal!

though I did once add tuna and sweetcorn to a macaroni cheese thing.

AndraMaria · 20/08/2010 09:55

Isn't that the whole idea? I mean is enough that we feel guilty that we had to go for a ready meal instead of cooking one day... At least to make it taste like our personal cooked meals.
Am I wrong?

Rockbird · 20/08/2010 09:57

Would never occur to me. It's as much as I can do to pierce film lid if I've resorted to one. If I'm going to faff around with herbs and cheese I might as well cook from scratch.

AlgebraRocksMySocks · 20/08/2010 10:20

no, not wrong andra if that's what you prefer :)

and you shouldn't feel guilty about the odd ready meal IMO.

it's just that if I'm going to be 'lazy' - I may as well do it properly and not do anything other than pressing microwave buttons! :o

AndraMaria · 20/08/2010 10:27

yeah you are right :)
And the reality is that I've had some good rm that didn't need anything else... they were tastier than my own Angry Grin
