My two hate most cooked cabbage but adore it raw and will wolf down in lentil and bacon soup (with reasonable amount of cabbage in)- Delia recipe here www.deliaonline.com/recipes/type-of-dish/soups/smoked-bacon-and-lentil-soup.html

bacon and cabbage is a winner. Just cook the bacon, boild the cabbage and then drain it and twirl it all about together, maybe some butter.

Darina Allen's method of cooking cabbage helped me to banish the memories of those awful childhood dinners of smelly, overcooked mush. Particulary dreaded it as my parents grew it themselves and my DB used to claim he found boiled and chopped slugs in his. Every mouthful was full of fear.

Anyway, my kids love cabbage cooked like this and served as a side, particulary with bacon products. Sometimes I just add crispy bacon lardons and serve with mash or potato cakes.

Shred your cabbage. Put about 8 table spoons of water in large saucpan with a large knob of butter. Put cabbage in and bring to boil , stirring all the time. Cover with a large lid, reduce heat and leave to steam for about 6 mins. Season well, can stir in another knob of butter if you like.

DD also likes soy sauce on hers but think thats an acquired taste. Sometimes I pop some mustards seeds in a hot pan and stir in as well.

Coleslaw - shred cabbage (red and white if you have both), a bit of onion, then either mayo or I make a dressing with yoghurt and horseradish and lemon juice. Scrunchy and nice and doesn't have that horrible "cabbagey" taste.

DD's favourite dish

3lbs potatoes, chopped into cubes and parboiled until beginning to soften
1 good head cabbage, finely shredded
2 onions, diced,
curry powder to taste
2 or 3 tablespoons oil
salt and pepper

Fry the onions and curry powder in a BIG pan for a few minutes. Add in the potatoes and cabbage. Stir around to mix well the put the lid on and cook for a few minutes. Take the lid off and cook, stirring all the time until everything is fully cooked (10minutes, maybe.) Season well and eat with crusty brown bread and butter.

This is a great favourite with my boys

I don't have kids, so I'm not familar with their tastes. But I've always liked (and did as a chile).....

I do what elliphant does:
"Shred your cabbage. Put about 8 table spoons of water in large saucpan with a large knob of butter. Put cabbage in and bring to boil , stirring all the time. Cover with a large lid, reduce heat and leave to steam for about 6 mins. Season well, can stir in another knob of butter if you like."

Except I sweat a sliced onion first and sometimes use white wine instead of the water. A good sprinkle of pepper is nice too.

Onions sweated with curry flavour (however you choose to have it), and cashew nuts, and shredded savoy cabbage steamed to softness. A bit of natural yoghurt and lemon juice stirred in at the last minute.

Sauerkraut?? Finely sliced cabbage fried with a bit of onion, seasoning and herbs with a bit of lemon juice. Goes great with pork
