Large black Italian sausage

Been given a sausage by my sister's Italian students. It is about 12inches long, black, vac-wrapped and extremely scary looking. Any ideas what it is and what I should do with it? (please try and resist the obvious!!)

No- it isn't. Apparently it needs cooking- but what kind of cooking???!!!???
