Blimey...I think I'm flouncing.

I never thought I'd post here. I leave Mn frequently (at least fortnightly), due to its capacity for eating time, only to reregister a week later, when my resolve has weakened or when I have an urgent question I need answering. I've been here a number of years, under many guises, and never been tempted to 'flounce'.

But this time I am 'leaving with indignation' (flouncing), so thought I'd declare my reasons on my way out.

I'm afraid the more I consider it, the more shabbily I think the Rev has been treated.

Unless there are aspects to this of which we are unaware, which I accept may be the case, (although this has never been suggested) then I honestly think her treatment has been quite unjustified.

Firstly, I imagine having to justify to MNHQ that she really is a Rev is quite humiliating. Somehow, just in the asking there is an implication that she may be decieving.

From this, can we assume that any of us could be required to submit our credentials to Mn at any point? If anyone shouts troll, for any reason?

If I claimed to be a tecaher and another poster doubted this would I have to send MN my PGCE certificate?

Surely MNHQ should only resort to such unpleasant personal intrusion when they have goosd reason cause to belive someone is being deceitful, and that thier duplicity could be considered harmful to other posters? Unless these occasions arise do we not have to take each other at face value on here?

Were either of these the case with the Rev?

There has been no suggestion here that there was any basis for the Rev being challenged, nothing suspicious or doubtful about her posts, nothing potentially harmful to other posters. The only reason I have seen given was PPH's claim that her ability to 'sense' trolls was ''legendary'.

I really don't think that is sufficient basis, particuarly when being persued so maliciously on here, really doesn't give MNHQ any rights to ask a poster to verify herself.

An 'we acknowledge your concern and will monitor the situation, but strongly suggest that you do not continue to target the Rev with personal attacks, and in future please report any concerns directly to MN.' Would have been an appropraite response, with a ban considered if such attacks occured again, as this would have been the 3rd incident.

To then muddy the waters of this whole incident, by asking Rev to change her name and decalring immediately following these events that MNHQ has concerns about her role on Mn, is at best crass handling of the situation.

I'm afriad MNHQ's justifcation that the Rev wasn't meant to tell MN of this, is in itself, shoddy.

MNHQ should have had the sense not to confuse these issues and considered the implication of their actions on the Rev and on the wider implication to MN.

They should have put time and space between this incident and the airing of any other, separate, concerns they had.

I apologies Rev, for bringing it up agian, I know you find it somewhat embarrassing to be the centre of controversy (but I'm going now so will embarrass you no further).

I may return occasionslly to get a specific question answered, i can't pretend I could reist that.

But in as far as MN being a place where I enjoy open debate, interaction witt interesting, intelligent poele on a variety of topics my MN days are over.

This has all left a rather bad taste.

Have you only just noticed this situation - I thought it was ages ago? I agree Mumsnet has changed but come on, don't be a flouncer.

Change from within.

Ignore the trolls, the gits and the cliques and just post interesting stuff and let the rest just go over your head. If people feel the need to take this too seriously the nasty people win.

I agree what happened with Rev was bloody awful, but if she can cope with it - can't you?

eekamoose · 26/01/2009 17:19

Nan, you don't know me, but I really think it would be a terrible shame if you left over this incident. Honestly I do. I lurked on the Rev threads and didn't comment because I wasn't on the Israel/Gaza threads which lead to the defrocking, so just felt that posting would be piling in on someone else's argument, so to speak.

I did have my say over the moldies thing because I was there.

However, you defended Rev's position magnificently and I think it would be awful if you went for good because you can't help stewing over it. I agree that it feels like a terrible injustice.

But open debate and interaction with interesting people etc are still available here. That hasn't changed.

Please think again.

tootiredtothink · 26/01/2009 17:21

I understand where you are coming from Nantucket.

The response from MNtowers was less than satisfactory IMO and as there have been consequences for Rev then so too should there have been for PPH. Certainly as this was not the first time Rev had been attacked by her.

They should have been publicly suspended at the least.

But it would be a shame if you did leave because of it. We need people like you on these boards.

Tortington · 26/01/2009 17:25

i've started to notice you nan, some v. interesting posts. and i dont want to appear sycophantic becuase i hate sycophants - so i shall bid you afond adeuieueu goodbye and would like to say this.

i agree with you, i think that the revs treatment from certain posters disgusting

that should have been dealt with quite severely. it was bullying and thats that

as the waters cooled it would have been oppertune to ask rev to drop the rev.

the checking of her credentials is out of order and incredulous.

SoupDragon · 26/01/2009 17:25

Why on earth would you feel the need to flounce about it if Rev doesn't???

dsrplus8haggisandneeps · 26/01/2009 17:25

rev rocks! dont leave, she'll miss you, we'll miss you! need more posters who take a stand against the bullies!

SoupDragon · 26/01/2009 17:28

I don't think that, having had the JudgeFlounce fiasco, checking credentials for a particular "job" is out of order when a poster is posting in that professional capacity. If I had such credentials, I would be happy to provide them if asked to clarify my expertise.

The bullying is a different matter altogether of course.

Mummyfor3 · 26/01/2009 17:28

I missed the whole situation re the Rev etc, so cannot comment, and love the idea of flouncing, haughty expression and all, but: do stay for all the above reasons.

Yours,
a recently returned Mner.

follderol · 26/01/2009 17:34

boy you lot are so up yourselves sometimes.

You go from one post where there's normal people posting advice to others and having a luagh to others where people are so embroiled in the whole forum that its almost laughable.

No professional person should purport to give advice or add weight to their words through the use of a serious title. Calling oneself a doctor when it is clearly untrue is different of course but to go around saying I'm a lawyer, doctor, someone of import gives the impression that their comments should be taken with more weight.

Clearly the owners of this place were uncomfortable with it too. I honestly wondered whether the poster was appointed by the owners.

If you're in religion and yo use your title on religion threads fair enough but I don't think that was the issue was it?

boredveryverybored · 26/01/2009 17:35

I watched the whole Rev situation unfold although never posted at the time. And i want to say "Bravo" for your post, I agree completely, and you said it all perfectly.
I also love the idea of flouncing
But maybe just a mini flounce is in order to make your point? i.e come back tommorow

follderol · 26/01/2009 17:37

I didn't see the "bullying" or anything preceeding the defrocking thread though

LadyOfWaffle · 26/01/2009 17:39
Sad
crumpet · 26/01/2009 17:44

I can't say that I have looked closely at ALL the Rev's threads, but from what I have seen, her posts were all alongs the lines of "this is what I think", rather than "I am the Voice of the Church, Hear my Word", so as such I simply don't understand the issue that some people have with her profession.

Of course if someone does show me where she was posting "in her professional capacity" - ie rather than posting her views as an individual, then I may have to eat my words. But I haven't found anything so far.

SoMuchToBits · 26/01/2009 17:44

Oh, don't flounce Nantucket. I can see why you might feel like doing so, but you will miss MN really, won't you

MitchyInge · 26/01/2009 17:45

I don't think leaving is the answer

MN is what we make it?

OrmIrian · 26/01/2009 17:50

DOn't leave.

I agree the whole rev thing was unpleasant and left me feeling quite uncomfortable. But it's over now. MN isn't about individuals, or even MN HQ - it's about all of us. And most of our bloody marvellous!

posieflump · 26/01/2009 17:53

god if you want to go, go!
but please don't dredge it all up again
for the love of God!

Tortington · 26/01/2009 18:10

thats rude posie - and thats what the hide button is for.

ruty · 26/01/2009 18:22

rev didn't try to add weight to her words by adding the name rev. She was here for ages under the name justabout and only added rev when she [after requests] started a reflection thread, led each week by a different MNetter. The title was humorous, even slightly tongue in cheek and self deflating, and anyone who knew her on MN knew this. It was people who didn't know her or her posts who started throwing around rather shocking accusations, particularly following the revelation that she had just suffered a miscarriage over Christmas. It was not the questioning of credentials that was the problem it was the shockingly abusive and repetitive nature of the 'questioning'

Don't leave Nantucket, please.

Oh Nantucket I wish you wouldn't go. Don't know who you were and are, but I like your posts and you'd be missed.

I don't usually give a shit about flouncers btw, but I do give a shit about losing yet another articulate, fun poster.
