I think the in crowd,if it is the ones I am thinking of,are a lot less in numbers than they used to be,and are actually,on the whole,quite a lot more reasonable than they were say 6 months ago.
I dont know how long you have been on MN,but I suspect a lot longer than me,so it can be difficult to see changes.

Fwiw,i didn't think that op was being nasty and a snob,i think she was taking a look of her own prejudices and saying how she now see's how hard it is to live on a low budget.
And that coming from relative wealth to low income is a difficult adjustment.
