Stupidly excited about the amount of fry in the cave.

A few months ago I removed my pleco's usual cave in hope it would slow down the amount of eggs being laid. He was laying in a piece of bog wood and I was getting around 5 survive from each spawn, I got over run with them but eventually managed to sell and rehome them.

Anyway 2 weeks ago my male moved into a new cave and my albino female laid her eggs, today I went for a poke around as he had been in there for a long time, I was shocked to see what I expect to be 50 babies Shock. Part of me is thinking 'wtf am I going to do with that many plecs?' But the other part of me is very excited ( they are so cute ).

So what's the chances of them all surviving? I have female Bettas, gourami and Corys in the tank, will any of them eat the baby pleco's?

BABY PLECS! I demand a photo Grin

I dunno mate, how big are they? You could bung a couple of handfuls of java moss in there so they've got some hiding places.

I will try and get a photo tomorrow, quite hard to get to them but I'm sure they will start coming out in the next day or 2, I can see them all wriggling, never seen so many, shame they all look brown ( no albino ).

I think the albino gene is recessive so you'd need two albino parents or one albino and the other carrying the albino gene. But I'm not an expert in genetics so I couldn't swear to it... Baby plecs are chuffing adorable.

Aw, they're so titchy! Is that one of your new snails on the left of the cave?

TrinityForce · 05/03/2015 19:36

My Corys continually ate all my cichlids fry (at least, I think it was them Grin) so naaah you'll have 45 at most!

good luck with them, baby fish are always so damn exciting. Do plecos take their fry on tours of the tank too?

Endler32 · 05/03/2015 20:13

Yes Eau, that's one of my snails, I'm still finding them great fun to watch.

I'm hoping my Corys won't eat the babies, I shall keep all my fish well fed in hope they don't feel peckish. The Bettas and gourami are top feeders so I'm hoping they won't be interested in them. I have a couple giant moss balls that are great for them to hide under.

Don't pleas grow to monstrous proportions....?
Hope you and your buyers have room?!

EauRouge · 05/03/2015 20:38

Not all plecs do, there are a few species that stay under 6 inches. A lot of them do get massive though.

Endler32 · 05/03/2015 21:18

These will grow no bigger than 6" ( thank god ), the larger breeds are harder to breed, common plecs never breed in tanks.

I have a local ( well not too local ) shop that will take them, I sold the last lot on ebay and local fb groups.

Head count of 37 this morning, still a few in the cave so at least 40 babies Smile.
