So DH and I have just had a rare Friday evening IN TOWN with pre dinner cocktails, lovely steak tea and final drink with ild friend before catching an early bus home. It was so fab. Not been out on "adult time " in years.

DD 14 stayed in with her favourite oven tea and the tv all to herself. Happy days Grin

DH and I get home and he puts a new movie on, one I've not seen before.

Deerhunter.

Jesus Christ. It's awful. So bleak.

Should have stayed in Confused

One of the best films ever IMO so moving
If you wanted a mindless romcom you should've chosen one

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 30/06/2023 23:02

No, absolutely I do agree. And had I been prepared I would have been good with his choice. I'll watch it again later over the weekend (sober) and I know I'll enjoy it as his film choices are epic.

It's more ... you end our evening with THIS?!!!

The music Confused I think I might cry

There is a huge middle ground between this and mindless romcoms!

AtrociousCircumstance · 30/06/2023 23:59

There’s a really sexist subtext to that Deerhunter vs ‘mindless romcom’ comment.

It is moving, but also an extremely bleak film and an odd choice after a rare and fun night out. Keeping things light doesn't necessarily mean it has to be mindless.

Beeinalily · 01/07/2023 00:06

I hated it. It also started with what appeared to be an actual deer being killed, so I didn't give a fuck about the people after that.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 01/07/2023 08:49

Glad it's not just me who thought it an odd choice! And he fell asleep half way through anyway so I turned it off and watched Parks and Rec for half an hour!

May go and watch Indy this weekend.

Have a fab one all Grin

I'm with you. A friend of mine raved about it back in the 80s when it was a more recent film, its obviously a marmite film.

Well, I'm a woman, and as feminist as they come, and I agree with that comment, totally.

aqiarious · 02/07/2023 12:55

Deerhunter.

Jesus Christ. It's awful. So bleak.

I'd stupidly mixed it up with something else and thought it was supposed to be about the impact of the Vietnam war and from the point of view of an elderly man and his daughter's relationship as they reconcile (I never did find the correct film). Confused

It was bleak and awful, but it stayed with me and some great acting. Robert de Niro particularly.

It’s a great film and also very bleak. Not necessarily what you’d look forward to after a nice night out.

You might also want to check your misogyny there with your ‘mindless rom com’

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 02/07/2023 13:01

I'm with you OP. It's a harrowing film at best! Not something you put on to watch for the bit between coming home and going to bed!

NooNakedJacuzziness · 02/07/2023 13:02

Christopher Walken is absolutely heartbreaking. I thought they could've done without most of the first hour though, went on a bit. Deffo not a Saturday night feel good film - make sure you choose next time!

Harrowing is right up our street! I suspect you wouldn't like Seul contre tous by Gaspar Noé which we watched last night? A horse butcher's life and mind begin to break down as he lashes out against various factions of society while attempting to reconnect with his estranged daughter. DH was laughing at bits of it. Maybe we're sick?

wutheringkites · 02/07/2023 13:18

@LaBefana

But op and most other posters are not saying that they never want to watch Deerhunter. There is a time and place for different types of film.

This reminds me of the time my brother was asked to choose a film for Christmas Day evening and he put Requiem for a Dream on. Merry fucking Christmas!

Are you thinking about "On Golden Pond"?

I've just looked it up and, yes, that's it! Thanks @CeciNestPasUnPipi

They're a bit different I think Blush

LaBefana · 02/07/2023 13:51

Can I ask if the film in question is The Deer Hunter (3 word title) made in 1978 with Robert De Niro, Meryl Streep, and Christopher Walken?

Perhaps he thought the only other possible option was a 'mindless rom-com'

Maybe showing ignorance here but yes I think it's the same ? Definitely De Niro, Streep and Walken

I would find that a fine end to an evening tbh. I have seen it countless times. The background to the relationships and illnesses surrounding the film are fascinating too.

The theme tune, Cavatina, played by John Williams on acoustic guitar, was a big hit at the time of the film's release. I still like it now.

I remember it being in the charts 😂
