Non annoying films for a 3 year old

I'm thinking that I will get some new DVDs, ones that me and the girls (3yo and 5mo) can watch as we wind down for the day. They need to be suitable but not boring or dodgy in any way. No disney princess or such crap please.

I'm thinking old musicals could be the way to go. We are having a bit of a "the king and I" phase, so we could capitalise on that, although an awful lot of musicals seem to have dodgy sections - ie obviously Caberet and Chicago are out of the question, so any suggestions?

The gruffalo is fairly easy on the ear for grown ups.

thisisyesterday · 18/04/2010 23:24

bedknobs and broomsticks? mary poppins? pete's dragon?

EvilTwins · 18/04/2010 23:27

Old fashioned musicals then. Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (fab dancing), The Sound of Music, Carousel, Oklahoma, Singin In The Rain.

My DDs are 3 and they adore Disney Princesses, so I can sympathise - if I have to sit through Beauty and the Beast one more time...

Lotkinsgonecurly · 18/04/2010 23:31

How about Toy Story, Shrek, Wiggles the Big Big show, firm favourites here.

gaelicsheep · 18/04/2010 23:32

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is a huge hit here.

We borrowed a film from the library recently, "Dreamer" about a girl and a race horse which DS also loves.

It's Disney, but Pinocchio is another one that goes down well.

WinkyWinkola · 18/04/2010 23:36

This is one of the loveliest stories for children I've seen in a long time. Totoro

MartinlovesDebi · 18/04/2010 23:36

It does rather go on tho, CCBB.

For a 3yo, the pixar ones might be the least annoying?

Or yes, Singing in the Rain is good. Lots of tenuously strung together musical numbers.

MartinlovesDebi · 18/04/2010 23:37

Bit old for a 3yo maybe Totoro? Wonderful though. I like the Kiki one as well, forgetten the name - young witch?

ginghamgiraffe · 18/04/2010 23:38

Lilo and Stitch
great elvis theme tune
Lovey girl in Lilo
Yes it's Disney but Idon't get tired of watching.

WinkyWinkola · 18/04/2010 23:39

My 5 yo loved Totoro since he was 2 and my 3 yo dd loves it. It's the music I think that captivates them. Give it a try.

gaelicsheep · 18/04/2010 23:41

The Pixar ones are dire IMO - all of them. I won't hear a word against CCBB

Clary · 18/04/2010 23:43

yy Mary Poppins and Sound of Music very good.

Wizard of Oz, Oliver! (hmm maybe a bit old for yours - sorry I read 3yo and 5yo at first), My Fair Lady all good.

When DS1 was this sort of age, as well as Beauty and the Beast he loved Wallace and Gromit.

gaelicsheep · 18/04/2010 23:48

Oh yes, my 3 year old DS loves Oliver (although I'm not too keen on the bit where Bill Sykes kills Nancy).

He hasn't seen the Wizard of Oz yet but I'm going to record it for him next time it's on. I find that film a little disturbing though, and I think he may be scared of the witch.

I'd definitely echo Mary Poppins and the Sound of Music - planning to try and record both of these when they're next on TV (missed Sound of Music over Easter )

TinyPawz · 18/04/2010 23:49

My dd (3) loves Walle & Mulan. Any disney film in a hit tbh

gaelicsheep · 18/04/2010 23:49

Also the filmed version of ALW's Cats. And DH recently watching Phantom of the Opera with him and he really like that too.

MartinlovesDebi · 18/04/2010 23:51

Well if he's tough enough to cope with the childcatcher he might be ok with the flying monkeys

Tikkabillajive · 18/04/2010 23:51

Totoro scared the pants off my 4 and 2 yr olds! Both strangely entranced by it though.

They both love the Pixar films - Finding Nemo and Monsters Inc much loved as well as the Toy Story ones.

They love The Wizard of Oz too - can't understand why they're not terrified by it if they found Totoro scary though . And the cottage we stayed at last week had a Wallace and Gromit video (I think the first one) which they watched obsessively on repeat.

gaelicsheep · 18/04/2010 23:51

DS liked Wall-E. I couldn't bear more than 10 minutes of it though. Happy Feet's another one - DH and DS like it, I can't stand it!

Non musical wise, DS also has Night at the Museum and really likes it.

Tikkabillajive · 18/04/2010 23:52

Just to add, I actually love the Disney princess films! I think it's only the totally overblown branding and merchandising that is offputting. The Little Mermaid is a great film!

gaelicsheep · 18/04/2010 23:52

"And DH recently watching Phantom of the Opera with him and he really like that too."

English is my first language honestly! Think it's time for bed.

muggglewump · 18/04/2010 23:53

Wallace and Gromit?

MartinlovesDebi · 18/04/2010 23:54

Oh I LOVE the rescuers, that's a great Disney film. Bernard and Bianca....

AitchTwoZone · 18/04/2010 23:57

dd loves anything with gene kelly, she's obsessed. singing in the rain has donald o connor too, so vg, but she likes american in paris more i think. and calamity jane, obv.

gaelicsheep · 18/04/2010 23:59

We also have an old video of the film Flipper which goes down a treat. (really must get to bed and stop mentally going through our DVD/video collection).

MartinlovesDebi · 18/04/2010 23:59

I love the way toddlers love musicals. It's so endearing.
