I'm thinking that I will get some new DVDs, ones that me and the girls (3yo and 5mo) can watch as we wind down for the day. They need to be suitable but not boring or dodgy in any way. No disney princess or such crap please.

I'm thinking old musicals could be the way to go. We are having a bit of a "the king and I" phase, so we could capitalise on that, although an awful lot of musicals seem to have dodgy sections - ie obviously Caberet and Chicago are out of the question, so any suggestions?

and the good thing is that you know they're good wholesome fayre.

Clary · 19/04/2010 00:31

Now have Wallace and Gromit theme tune in my head.

Still a hit here - I caught DD (almost 9) watchign The Wrong Trousers on CBBC this morning

savoycabbage · 19/04/2010 00:49

My three year old loves Mama Mia and Calamity Jane.

ButterPie · 19/04/2010 12:05

Wallace and Gromit are already a big hit (we're from Preston, so they kind of have to be)(my Dad has a motorbike and sidecar too).

I will get looking out for those suggestions-thanks!

Mary poppins, Wizard of Oz, Bedknobs and boomsticks, The three lives of Thomasina were all my favourites as a child

BettyButterknife · 19/04/2010 12:13

Chicken Run?

Would Annie be too scary?

DS was 2.5yo at Christmas and watched the Wizard of Oz - hated the flying monkeys and was quite spooked by the witch. The other night he woke after a nightmare saying 'bad witch, bad witch!' so I'm not sure I'd recommend that. He loves the soundtrack though!

chachna · 19/04/2010 17:50

what's in the cinemas's that is suitable for 3yr olds?

QueenThistle · 20/04/2010 11:48

Onother vote for Studio Ghibli/Miyazaki films here. Since turning 3 DD (now 4) has watched Totoro, Kiki's Delivery service, The Cat Returns, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle and Ponyo. All big hits, her favourite being Howl.

We recently watched Lilo and Stitch for the first time. It was excellent Stitch is hilarious.

Curious George is easy on the eyes and ears (due to the dulcet tones of Jack Johnson).

Charlottes Web (1973)

Hercules - I love the soundtrack!

Kung Fu Panda is a firm favourite of her's too.

TinyPawz · 20/04/2010 20:29

I heart Wall:e.....

CantSleepWontSleep · 20/04/2010 20:40

Dd is just 4, and her faves are Mary Poppins, Mama Mia and Monsters Inc. Also just got her Toy Story which went down well.

Lionstar · 20/04/2010 20:45

3 year old DD (with a passionate DISTASTE for Disney princesses) loves to watch Totoro, Shrek, Evan Almighty, Happy Feet, Ice Age, Madagascar, Toy Story and The Magic Roundabout

Must try her on some of the old fashioned musicals too

NorkilyChallenged · 20/04/2010 20:49

My two adore Mary Poppins. Mary Poppins was actually probably DD2's first words. We now sometimes launch into a family rendition of "Let's go fly a kite" when we're going round Tesco or something

Girls also really like Monsters Inc

I like the suggestion of old musicals though. My eldest (3.2) is very sensitive and even slightly scary things can be too much for her so musicals might be a good way to go.

gaelicsheep · 20/04/2010 21:04

I also remembered The Land Before Time and the sequel - DS loves those too.

schroeder · 20/04/2010 21:05

I'll second Wallace and Gromit, Toy story and Finding Nemo.Bug's life is brilliant too.
My personal fave is Trap door(not a film but a great little series) if you can track it down.

Butterpie I thought you must be from Preston I remember being very confused about them and barmcakes and brews when I first went there for poly
Brilliant market and library too and the Welly (nostalgic for it now)

Was coming on to recommend Totoro, but see that someone has beaten me to it

it's fine for a 3yo - DS (2.5) LOVES it, 3rd favourite film (after The Gruffalo and The Snowman)

DS (3) was recently transfixed by Star Wars.

mumof2222222222222222boys · 20/04/2010 21:18

Another vote for Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty. They also like Curious George which has a rather nice Jack Johnston soundtrack. And they like to watch ridiculous extreme skiing DVDs...but that is another story

IMoveTheStars · 20/04/2010 21:20

Oh - wrt Miyazaki - do NOT let a 3yo watch Princess Mononoke, Grave of the Fireflies, or Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind... all far too bloody and scary for little kids.

DS loves Laputa too, but you have to skip the violent bits and just let him watch the lovely floaty bits

Howls was a bit much for my DS, but only just.. Cannot wait for Ponyo as I know he will love it.

(Ghibli geek? Not me )

Has anybody seen Earthsea? Wondering if that's OK for little ones.

StayFrosty - awful, isn't it. Excellent film, but I always end up in tears for most of it. Worst thing is that it's a semi-true story
