Revolutionary Road-Right a few questions that are bothering me?

Watched this from Sky Anytime last night.
Can imagine that it would be a great novel or play, but was reasonable as a film.
Anyhow, some questions that I can't find the answers too, or opinions please
She was past 12/40 when she used the abortion kit, so did she think it was going to kill her, because the way she said goodbye to Frank with breakfast that morning and then to her children via Milly almost suggested she knew she was going to, but she wouldn't know that for sure, as she was only just past 12 weeks when she decided to go through with the termination or was she planning on starting afresh with Frank
Where on earth did you get those kits from, they would be very difficult to use on yourself!

Crikey, the pedants will be out in force, the question mark should not be in the title
I know the questions are bothering me, it is not in debate, sorry

No, I don't think she thought she could die.
Actually, I loved the book (and I liked the movie) and I only read it last year, and yet I can't remember . She prepared a nice breakfast for him, didn't she, I thought it was as she was happy to terminate the pregnancy and finish her marriage, no?

DarrellRivers · 08/03/2010 20:30

Yes, I think I thought that too.
That she might have thought there was an outside chance that it might kill her, but more likely would be a new start.
But she was acting like some-one who was preparing to kill herself.
It was probably difficult to get the full run down on those things as to side-effect rates and complications
Or perhaps, was she planning to run away?
(I do like films which make me think)
DH and I have been ruminating on happiness and contentment in the suburban dream and how everyone yearns to be 'special'

summary of last chapter suggests she does know it might kill her

I don't remember it in the book either

I thought the film was so much more bleak and dark than the book was tbh

I also found the book more about him than her wherease the film felt more about her than him

Francagoestohollywood · 08/03/2010 20:36

I don't think she was particularly concerned about the risks she was taking by having an illegal abortion, she just really didn't want to be pg, have another child, keep leading that existence that she came to despise so much.

Have you read the book? I really recommend it, it is a great tale of delusion, ime (and lots of Frank's streams of consciousness).

DarrellRivers · 08/03/2010 20:36

I am tempted to suggest the book for our Book Club, it does sound enjoyable

I think she had realised that Paris was only a pipe dream which is why she "accidentally" got pregnant, having said that she knew that whilst Paris was not a goer, she could not survive another minute in the burbs.

DarrellRivers · 08/03/2010 20:38

Neither of them came across as particularly likeable characters in the film
Did you warm to them more in the book?

Francagoestohollywood · 08/03/2010 20:38

yes, agree book more about frank

foxinsocks · 08/03/2010 20:40

yes, it's a good book - I found the beginning better than the end but still enjoyable.

they explore a few other themes a bit more (like his relationship with his father)

DarrellRivers · 08/03/2010 20:40

I think she knew there was nowhere for her to go.
She needed financial support from her Frank as she had no visible means of supporting herself, yet her life in the suburbs was just a gilded cage and intolerable
That's why I thought she might have been contemplating death as a valid option

yyy, I wondered if they had 'other' family rather than their immediate one.
They seemed a little 'cut off' from other points of view, but was not sure whether they had chosen that position

Cut and pasted from Yahoo answers........
'The red rubber tubing was known as a syringe they grated carbolic soap added some disinfectant and warm watter into a bowl and put the syringe in to the vagina and pumped the contents of the bowl in until the woman is fall then 2 days after they would start too bleed and the cells would all be flushed away

Nan used a back street abortionist and thats how i know these are the exact methods the back street abortionist used'
