Totally agree SEA. The ending of the first film sort of left it up in the air for the viewer to interpret for themselves. Having a sequel tramples all over that.

Empire review (not particularly spoiler-y)

Ah, Empire says the US cut of the original had a different ending to the UK one, hmmm.... Because the UK one basically had two endings, didn't it; it let you go 'Oh, phew!' and then went 'Ha ha! Not really!' I guess the US version cut off the ha-ha-not-really bit, so a sequel would make more sense?

blimey i am so confused by these alternate endings. endings should be the same for all. everywhere!
