I adore this film! The denial, the longing, the not fitting in to your life, the taboo, the broken hearts because of the taboo, the broken hearts because you can't tell about the taboo. I can understand why a lot of people don't get it but it was expertly and elegantly acted by all.
She caught them snogging and almost vomitted with shock. She begins to understand that her husband has another life that even he struggles to accept. They divorce eventually but he still cannot commit his love because he is tormented by it being unaccepted. As a child, his father brought him up to believe it is wrong and he took him to see the body of a man who had been killed for being gay.
He continued to meet Jack over the years but Jack needed to fulfil that part of his life more fully. Innes couldn't bear to think of Jack having another partner but ultimately Jack did meet someone else. Innes remained his true love.
Someone found out about Jack being gay and 3 men beat him into a pulp and murdered him.
Innes phoned Jack's wife one day when his postcard came back stamped with 'deceased'. She was bitter and clearly knew the truth but told Innes that Jack had died whilst repairing the car.
Innes went to visit Jack's parents in order to carry out Jack's wish that his ashes be scattered in his favourite place, Brokeback Mountain.......Jack's father said their was a family plot and over his dead body would the ashes go anywhere but there.
Jack's parents clearly knew their son was gay but the father remained in denial. Jack's mum understood and said nothing but encouraged Innes to visit Jack's room. In the room Innes found his shirt and Jack's shirt hanging together, the shirts they had worn on Brokeback Mountain that first Summer, still with blood on it from their fight at the end of the season. She helped Innes sneak it out of the house so he would have something of Jack's to keep close.
It is such a beautiful love story of two men who are deeply in love but who cannot be together and who handle it differently. And I am so glad we live in a time where is it beginning to be accepted.
