I think it is good, as in it's a well made film with great central performance, but I confess I didn't love it. DH was much more enthusiastic though...

But if you have a soft spot for Mickey it will be worth the price of your ticket.

Marissa Tomei (sp?) is great too.

I just wasn't that satisfied by the ending as it was just a bit predictable.

Thanks

Am looking forward to it

Have read some favourable reviews now, as well

Mickey Rourke just got an Oscar nomination for best actor!

Enjoy...

notnowbernard · 22/01/2009 14:30

Really?

I do like him. Deserved nomination, in your opinion?

I think it has been a slow year for truly great films and truly great performances, so considering the company he's in, yes, probably deserved....but he is sort of playing himself lol!

In fact, I think it will be either him or Frank Langhell (Frost Nixon) who gets it.

jujumaman · 23/01/2009 16:45

I liked it, the story is a bit predictable and there are a few cliches but I found the backroom wrestling antics fascinating and it is a very powerful performance. There's an especially good scene at a deli counter. MR is very good, though as sycamore says, he's playing himself

I think Sean Penn will get the Oscar, at least he deserves to. He's astonishing in milk, though imo the actual film is a let down.

Have now seen this film

I really, really liked it. Loved it, in fact

Marvellous performance (agree he is effectively playing himself) but I thought he brought real warmth to the role and I felt very sympathetic to the character he played... despite character being a bit of a 'lost cause', 'failure' etc

Liked the way it was filmed, too

Glad you liked it Notnowbernard - what about that stapling scene though? Did you have stomach enough to watch the whole thing?!

I agree about Sean Penn's performance in Milk, but like quite (all?) the nominated male actors this year, their turns have on the whole been better than the films themselve, IMHO!

notnowbernard · 25/01/2009 18:50

Stapling scene a bit

My brother and cousins were all massively into WWF wrestling in the 80s (Hulk Hogan et al) so I didn't really take the wrestling scenes too seriously

Was more struck by the pathetic venues (school halls, gymnasiums etc). Really added to the whole sense of failure and decline
