Not sure about this one. Ravishingly shot, but …

Elinor and Edward were true to the book, but Marianne appeared to have morphed into Cathy from Wuthering Heights, Sir John Middleton into Sir John Falstaff, Lady Middleton into Mary Bennett, and the Colonel into Professor Bhaer

The never brushed hair was very distracting

I thought Fiona Shaw stole the show , played Mrs Jennings less shrill and more reflective but v witty and caring . Mr Palmer was weak but the Elinor and Edward romance beautifully executed. The cinematography was lovely but the unkempt hair v annoying as was Marianne’s lip enhancement and overall demeanour . The chap from slow horses was great as the half brother and his mean wife less of a caricature than usual

Fiona Shaw was good, wasn't she? I felt she was a breath of fresh air, finally an injection of energy - and I mean the actor as well as the character.

BeKhakiReader · 30/09/2026 23:10

I know it sounds daft, but I simply couldn’t get past the unbrushed hair and found it incredibly distracting. Why would they make that choice?

Blah. To me the 1995 version is perfect, so it was always going to be a hard act to follow. I actually fell asleep halfway through it.

BeKhakiReader · 30/09/2026 23:11

And my eyes rolled up to my eyebrows at the casting of Mr Palmer. Just why?

PrincessOfPreschool · 01/10/2026 09:29

Just watched 1995 S & S with DD so looking forward to seeing the new one. She found Greg Wise distinctly unappealing (blasphemy!) so I'll be interested in her comparisons and overall conclusions. She's nearly 18.

The dancing was very odd indeed, not that I am an expert on Georgian balls. But bending over backwards and lifting people up seemed most unlikely. And another thing for every adaptation ever, the dancing is always perfectly choreographed and everyone in step. Pretty sure that in reality, you'd get people turning left when they were meant to be turning right, bumping into ine another. Obviously it wouldn't look as good to film, but I just can't believe everyone always danced perfectly.

The hair really annoyed me, and Marianne at the start running about with her dress so untied. I mean, they might not have dressed up as for a day in London, but i reckonthey would at least have done their hair. LAnd it did feel Wuthering Heights, even though Dartmoor can be pretty remote and bleak.

I wasn't too bothered by Mr Palmer, as he barely featured.

The best adaptation was the 1980 BBC series, because some of it was filmed where I lived, and 7 year old me and my younger sister were taken to see the filming, and we were allowed to sit in the actual carriage they used, which apparentlyQueen Victoriahad been in - and not even Emma Thompson could surpass that. I realise no one else will quite have this slant on it, mind you.

But also, there are other authors of classic fiction besides Austen. It feels like Emma, S&S and P&P and Persuasion are the only things anyone ever wants to adapt. I suppose there's s lot of Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights, too.

On your last point, I think it’s because you can tweak the adaptations into being romances or romcoms (I mean, WH is not a romance at all, but it’s always been adapted as one, and I’d argue no JA or CB novel is a straight romance) which have perennial appeal, and can count as ‘cosy’.

Lots of classic novels I’d love to see good adaptations of you can imagine not getting past the pitch stage unless a serious director/serious finance/a major star backed it.

I would adore to see a multi-part adaptation of Charlotte Bronte’s Villette, but you can imagine the backers going ‘So the heroine is not only plain, sour, mousy and puritanical, and fanatically anti-Catholic, but she abruptly switches her attentions midway through the screenplay from a sexy doctor who friendzones her to a bad-tempered fellow-teacher who is devoted to the memory of his long-dead fiancée and departs on a doomed voyage to save some slave plantations because the dead fiancée’s nasty granny asked him to? And then dies?’

WHAAAAAAAT?! Grin

Wait until she sees the 2026 Willoughby, she might reconsider her opinion of Greg Wise!

Sausagenbacon · 01/10/2026 10:32

I refuse to go.
Just check out the poster. If they can't even get that right what hope is there for the film?

Oh no. They haven’t spoiled it with gratuitous sex scenes have they? I promised to take my dear old mum.

It's rated U, you're fine

I was astonished to find myself wiping away tears at the end … 🤷‍♀️

Me too even though I wanted to give them all a bath and a hair wash!

Irritated by the casting of Mr Palmer- just why?!

I thought they only put their hair up once they were married ?

Was the dancing historically accurate as I quite liked it?

Brandon was dull and wooden not dark and brooding. Did say a quiet Phwoar when he chucked Willoughby out though 😉

Tick-box casting.

BabblingBiddy · 01/10/2026 20:12

I thought it was nice. I'm not sure if I've seen the 1995 version, and haven't read the book.

Whilst some of the scenery was stunning, some of the indoor scenes were so dark I couldn't see what was happening.

The casting of Mr Palmer was ridiculous. My mum was convinced it was meant to be a "Gentleman Jack" undercover lesbian relationship. I said it was an NB actor. But so obviously female that it didnt work. And we didn't think any of the men were swoon worthy!

Edited to add: I hated the dancing. They tried to modernise the classic style and its awful.

Watch the 1995 version! It's a masterpiece

Will do! I feel like I have seen it. But dont remember it. So maybe I haven't.

BlueZone · 02/10/2026 10:55

Whoever cast Eliot Sumner in this otherwise enjoyable adaptation, needs a good talking to! Was she/her parents good friends if the director? It also made me appreciate how good Hugh Laurie was in the same role, and also angry that a talented actor missed out on a good opportunity. The industry is hard enough as it is.

pandatot · 02/10/2026 11:50

Mr Palmer totally ruined the whole thing for me, completely jarred me out of the zone. What awful casting!

She's the child of Sting.

AliceinNumberland · 03/10/2026 13:38

I liked it. My major annoyances were the weird dancing, the straggly hair and the bad table manners. And the female playing Mr Palmer. Fiona Shaw is excellent. The scenery was gorgeous, and I felt even with the plot changes it was true to the essence of the book.

rookiemere · 06/10/2026 08:24

I enjoyed the Elinor and Edward plot, very well played. Marianne I just found deeply annoying- I know she is meant to be, but for the life of me I couldn’t figure out what Colonel Brandon was meant to see in her, even her supposed beauty with her draggly hair seemed overplayed.

The choice of actor for Mr Palmer was incredibly jarring and detracted from the small but excellent performance by Mrs Palmer.

Htcunya · 06/10/2026 19:13

I've just seen it and really enjoyed it. Most of the performances were good, and I especially liked Elinor and Edward, (but then I like George MacKay very much!) and Mrs Jennings. Marianne's hair didn't bother me!

Wasn't keen on Colonel Brandon until the late scenes and found his slight accent a bit distracting. I now see that the actor is Norwegian which explains it. But why cast a Norwegian actor who wasn't any better in the role than many English actors would have been?

Willoughby was miscast and I really disliked Mr Palmer being so obviously female. Why do that? Thank goodness it was only a small part of the film.

The cinematography was lovely, as were all the beautiful dogs.

Unlike many here, I didn't totally love the Emma Thompson version, good though it was, partly because she and Alan Rickman were too old. And Greg Wise doesn't really appeal.

soupmaker · 07/10/2026 00:53

I enjoyed it. Fiona Shaw stole every scene she was in. I loved the cinematography, it was so dark and beautiful. I’ve got pals who wax lyrical about the Ang Lee/Emma Thompson version and refuse to go see this one - I think I prefer the 2026 version, the other is too technicolour for me. I really liked the unkept looks and the dancing, reminded me of country dancing as a teenager! Agree the casting of Mr Palmer was odd but loved George McKay as Edward.

mizu · 07/10/2026 20:36

I went to see it last weekend and Fiona Shaw definitely stole every scene she was in. I enjoyed it.

LindorDoubleChoc · 07/10/2026 20:53

I absolutely loved every single thing about it! ❤

I didn't expect to because I have a great fondness for the 1994 Emma Thompson production for personal reasons to do with the location very close to where I was living and friends working on the film, and just because it's also great ...

But I LOVED this new one too. The cinematography was incredible, and the cast and acting were absolutely solid. I would happily recommend to everyone.

Badvocthebad · 07/10/2026 22:00

Dreadful.
Some very odd casting decisions (Col. Brandon, Norwegian?)
Historically also very inaccurate - no beards on men then! And women wore hair up after they left school.
I think the Director was trying to make Austen into Bronte, which really annoyed me.
The worst thing was the duel rubbish and changing Edwards personality...offering to dump Lucy!?
Nope.
It was awful.
