Sorry if there is a thread already, I’ve not seen it.. But..

Who else is excited for Practical Magic 2 to be released this week? When are you going to see it, who with, and what are you wearing?

Have you seen it yet OP? I went this afternoon with mum and sister. I remember being a bit scared watching the first one but PM2 is definitely more emotional that scary! It was an easy watch, funnier than I expected and on the whole we really enjoyed it.

Not yet, I’m going to watch it with my sister on Sunday as it’s the only day she could get childcare. Desperately avoiding all social media spoilers. I’m glad you enjoyed it 🫶🏼✨

I enjoyed it.

Just watched PM1 with my 12 year old, we really enjoyed it for all the autumn cosy vibes but it was a lot more soapy emotional than spooky!

and we couldn’t get over how the 1st husband is just forgotten about?!

but we’re looking forward to watching PM2, maybe a bit closer to Halloween if it’s still on then

It was a good 1hr30 movie, unfortunately it was 2hr10.
I found Sandra Bullock’s appearance distracting, she’s had so much work done that she just doesn’t look right anymore.
It was also a lot darker in places than I remember the original film being.

MyWildOliveGoose · 13/09/2026 22:47

I have now seen it, and I am obsessed.. but I am a witchy girl, I love my cats, my affirmations (spells), crystals, herbs etc etc etc and I have watched Practical Magic for the last 20+ years atleast once a month, sometimes more. It’s been my comfort movie my whole life, and for me.. Practical Magic 2 has not disappointed me at all. I love it, I feel like it’s the perfect follow on. I cried and I laughed and I came home feeling really content and wholesome. 😌 I recommend it to anyone who is in love and obsessed with the first, it gets 10/10 for me.

Having always really loved the original, I went yesterday to a noon showing of the sequel, paired with a delicious white wine sangria (movie theatre really missed the boat by not promoting a Midnight Margarita special though...) and really enjoyed it. Just 2 complaints though -

  • films HAVE to stop portraying Britain like this! The train had me rolling my eyes into the back of my head
  • this one pertains to the first movie, and has bugged me for YEARS! I think the makers of Practical Magic owe a massive debt of gratitude to Meg Ryan's portrayal of Pamela Courson in The Doors when it comes to Gilly's aesthetic and mannerisms. A niche complaint, admittedly...

I thought the script was weak and it was a complete waste of two fine actresses. Far too long, by at least half an hour, mostly at the beginning which made it difficult to get into.

Really schmaltzy. I never saw the first one and my expectations were clearly wrong! I think this is really a children's film.

I also think it's ridiculous when they cast small people as adult offspring , presumably to show that they are the "children" of another role in the film.

It's ridiculous, Sandra Bullock could only have had two adult girls that much smaller than herself if she'd married someone half her size.

And the 1950s bus!

I wonder how many overseas viewers now think the UK is villages made out of flint which you get to in 1950s trains and buses.

I'm interested to see reviews on this.

I am a huge fan of PM1 but I don't really fancy PM2. The first movie was witchy via vibes, music and good storyline.

From the trailers I've seen of PM2, it looks like it's seen "Disney-fied" - zappy finger magic a la Hocus Pocus and a fair bit of facial blurring on the actresses to hide the wrinkles!

fandjango · 18/09/2026 23:29

Absolutely loved this. Me and my friend went tonight and we had some margs in some witchy cups. Cried, laughed, and all the emotions. Really enjoyed it xx

Anendlessseriesofunfortunateevents · 18/09/2026 23:39

I loved the first movie, went this week to see the second with my sisters and loved it. Im not usually emotional when watching stuff but this one there was a part where I was sat with tears rolling down my cheeks!

I thought it was a nice combination of magic, humour, sisterhood, etc.

I do now have the lime and coconut song stuck in my head though.....

Mistachio · 18/09/2026 23:50

I saw the trailer for this and thought it looked good. Thought I’d better watch PM1 first. Thought it was one of the dullest films I’ve ever seen so haven’t bothered with PM2.

FlorisApple · 19/09/2026 00:15

I saw this with my 14 yo dd recently, having watched PM1 a few months ago as a family movie night and found it quite dark, and a bit much for my 11 yo ds.

PM2: we enjoyed it. My daughter moreso than me. I loved the way it all looked (although yes, the portrayal of the UK was absurd, especially the transport 😂) So art direction was great, I thought, and I guess we're due for a 90s nostalgia comeback. I also thought the male love interest was hot and haven't seen that actor before.

BUT: Gosh the script left a lot to be desired. There's hardly any dialogue! PM1 was very wittily written and had a lot more depth in terms of women's powers, sisters, making compromises in order to have relationships with men etc. This one relied on the first movie and just referenced all that stuff, but just didn't have anything much to say. I definitely thought this one was less feminist, which maybe reflects the direction that the world has gone in since the original was made.

That's an insightful comment. I knew something was bothering me that I hadn't put my finger on. Looking back, there was a very strong undercurrent that women's lives are without value if they can't find a man to love.

fandjango · 19/09/2026 13:51

I’ve been listening to the soundtrack on spotify. Fab mix!

HermioneWeasley · 19/09/2026 20:41

I’ll admit it, I thought it was dreadful and I loved PM1 (hence going)

  • pacing was so weird - so much happened in the first 20 mins or so without explanation - Jesus finds a book hidden for 400 years with no explanation. (What are the chances that Maria Owens was even literate enough to write a book?) then despite being hale and hearty she just dies (of what?) and Gideon gets knocked over and then it slows right down
  • no explanation of the book but endless conversations about cool whip and endless scenes of Nicole Kidman lugging her suitcases around
  • the theme is sisterhood but one of the daughters is just left watching a guy who is in a coma. Would have been much more powerful if they’d gone together to break the curse
  • All the plastic surgery was really distracting
  • As others have said, the portrayal of England is ridiculous
  • Ian Wright just happens to be from the village that Maria is from and recognises it from a few streets rendered in salt
  • the physicality between Gilly and Sally was all off - they look like lovers not sisters

but Lee Pace looks gorgeous in it so that helped enormously.

HermioneWeasley · 20/09/2026 07:57

Also Nicole Kidman’s Australian accent kept appearing

Mirrorxxx · 20/09/2026 08:02

I found it very emotional but far too long. And the daughters are fairly pointless characters.

secretfreckle · 20/09/2026 11:15

Really boring.
And much too long.
The first one is great!

Naurrr · 20/09/2026 11:26

There was a gross amount of advertising in it.
The suitcases
Cool Whip
Ninja blender
American airlines

Sisterhood but all based around a curse so they can't get a man and desperately strive the end the curse so they can get boyfriends, and how the curse is resolved at the end, so yay- men 🙄
Daughters 20 years too young.
Botox and fillers
