This was a sad film because it was based on a true story. Basically an experimental drug was administered to victims of encepalitis lethargica (which reached pandemic levels in the 20's). The drug brought them out of the catatonic state they'd been in for many years. However very sadly it wasn't the miracle cure it was originally thought and their patients soon relapsed.

It affected me when I watched it again after seeing my poor Mum suffer from Alzeheimers. It made me wonder how it must have felt for her having brief interludes of clarity before leaving the world behind again until she had next brief moment of clarity, which gradually became less and less as her world closed until it was no more. 😢

Yes, I know exactly what you mean. Again, it's a film I think about often. I love films starring Robin Williams - he was a great actor. Have you watched 'Noel'? - you will definitely like that one too. It stars Robin Williams, Susan Sarandon and Paul Young (there are lots of films of the same title so it can be difficult to find). Another film that really makes you think!

The House of Sand and Fog is a great hidden gem with Ben Kingsley

45 years, I think about it a lot. @Mathsbabe I read that book for English at school and I also think about it a lot. They both had a lasting effect on me.

Jaws - still uneasy in the sea

I saw Titanic at the cinema as a teenager and was so affected by it I couldht speak for the rest of the evening.
Recently Captain Philips, not necessarily the whole film but Tom Hanks performance when it dawns on him whats just happened. Really made me emotional watching him.

Cape Fear (1991 version) watched it when I was a teenager made me very wary of hooking up with strange men in bars, which is probably a good thing.

Captain Corelli's Mandolin. First watched when i was around 20 and have never been able to quite explain why, but it stuck with me for weeks and I still think about it now. I think maybe that normal life and love could continue amidst the horror of war? This thread has reminded me its about time I watch it again, along with a few others 🤣

She went through an awful ordeal. Sure he bit part of her cheek off.

I loved "Still Alice" - it is about a woman who has early onset dementia. It is so sad and so powerful.

Somewhere In Time - for the first time seeing what it was like to literally die of a broken heart.

The Deer Hunter - Christopher Walken was phenomenal esp the Russian Roulette Scene

Midnight Express - the music was haunting,

Ben Hur - the brutality of the Romans

@marplemead I am so glad someone mentioned Arrival, I feel like it’s so often overlooked but it’s a stunning film. I think about it often…..

It came on as a follow on to something I had been watching, and I wasnt really paying attention, when suddenly I was all eyes and ears I watched it three times that day

Let Him Have It. I was left reeling for weeks and months as a teenager. I remember writing to my MP asking for support to pardon Derek Bentley. It also made me forever terrified of regimes with capital punishment.

Koyaanisqatsi was a strange full feature-length sort of documentary in the early 80s. It captures, through footage and music, life on the planet limping along, increasingly disconnected from nature and the natural order of things. There is no dialogue and no narrative as such -it's probably perceived as an arty movie. I watched it in my local village cinema 3 times as a precocious 10 year old and it changed my life. It woke me up to the vastness of our human experience of life sitting within the even greater container of the natural world. I suppose it showed me a shade of wonder that had a distinctly adult flavour (not 'adult', but 'of the world'). Wonder and dread in equal measure.
