Has anyone done this? I’ve been on the 50 books reading thread for years, now I’m entering my 50th year and going to aim for watching 50 films in the next 12 months - a mix of cinema and streaming.

Would love some recommendations for great films on Netflix or Prime to get me started!

Sounds good

The shape of water, hidden figures, darkest hour, big hero six are some of my favourites ❤️

Fifty films in a year isn't even one a week? I reckon I get through that many in a month, although I don't watch TV and I have a cinema on the corner of my street Smile

Some favourites of mine off the top of my head:
Babe
Jaws
In The Mood For Love
Planes, Trains & Automobiles
Seven Samurai
Parasite
Some Like It Hot
Jackie Brown
Uncut Gems
Robocop
Snatch
The Raid
Finding Nemo (and Finding Dory)
Terminator 2: Judgement Day
One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest

@SocksAndTheCity I hardly watch any TV but my downfall is spending the evening doomscrolling on social media! I’m hoping the challenge will inspire me to get out to the cinema more.

Well that sounds fab!

Do you have a cinema near you that does a membership scheme? Before I moved I had a Cineworld Unlimited card and that really encouraged me to visit when I knew I could go as much as I liked 😀

I watched over 50 films in 2020. Didn't set out to though. All bar one were at home.

Best of all was a Spanish film called The Olive Tree.

Dr Zhivago (1965)
Far from the Madding Crowd (1967
Women in Love (1969)
The Go-Between (1971)
Tess
Another Country

Like a PP I watched loads of films in lockdown - and kept count - it was 89 in 2020 and 52 in 2021! My favourites in recent years have been CODA, Brooklyn and Anora.

What do you like? No one can offer decent suggestions without an idea of what you enjoy.

In terms of stone cold classics, Casablanca, The Apartment or Some Like It Hot, 12 Angry Men, Singin' In The Rain, High Society, Sound Of Music, Jaws, Thelma and Louise, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, Babe, The Bourne Identity...

MegBusset · 18/06/2026 22:20

So I like a real mix… David Lynch films, 70s/80s classics, ridiculous Adam Sandler comedies, thrillers, Wim Wenders, Werner Herzog, well-made blockbusters… the only genres I don’t really like are musicals and romcoms!

We have an Odeon but it’s a Luxe so unlimited is £20 a month… I can get single tickets for £7.50 ish each depending on day so that’s probably more cost effective.
