Sheep Detectives

Just saw this at cinema with 11 yo DD. Very funny and easy to watch we thought. DD chuckled throughout. Plus it's short compared to some films. Good to see a film without lots of action and fancy locations.

Cinema half empty on a sat afternoon despite it being a PG and raining. Guess it's difficult to market it as adults AND kids.

FWIW the worst thing was someone said 'shit' in an advert prior to the film.

I missed that too! We watched it today, and even my 14 year old DS said it was 'decent'. I must admit I had a tear at points, but I'm known for crying at films etc.

Went with my mum to see it today having read the book a couple of years ago. I was surprised to see kids there (maybe because we went to a nice Everyman, sofa cinema), but I can completely see why it would appeal.

I love sheep and lambs anyway and I thought the talking animals were cleverly done as it could have looked very odd. I enjoyed all the tropes, the cute little village a la Marple, the stories (I enjoyed that aspect in the book too) and the baddies.

I haven't seen it, but my immediate reaction on hearing about it was to wish it came from Aardman.

I have spent time on sheep farms and I think any sort of knowledge of sheep farming might get in the way a bit at times.... Although some aspects made slightly more sense by the end (especially from a financial point of view).

I agree it was a bit like the Thursday murder club - a sort of version of a UK small town aimed at international viewers. The yellow and black police car was a bit weird unless it was supposed to suggest he was so useless he didn't even have the right type of car... And the cell with bars inside the police office seemed unlikely but I have to admit my only knowledge of custody cells is from TV programmes (Police Interceptors and the like...)

It was more emotional than I'd expected - I hadn't really investigated much before I booked the ticket.

It was a good family film overall.

I haven't read the book. When I scrolled through the cinema listings it was definitely marketed at families.

Just been with dh. We both enjoyed it. Thought it took a bit to get going. I laughed a couple of times. Didn't cry which is unlike me.
A man and his dd left early on. She was no more than 7. Good decision imo. It's more 10 plus I'd say.

I went to a 10.30 session this (Sunday) morning in a rural (farming) NZ town. The session was about 80% full, with a really mixed audience. Twas a fun little film, but I'm glad I didn't take my 6yo otherwise it might have cemented her wish to become vegetarian, haha.

I’m glad you wrote this post OP. We’ve been thinking of going to the cinema this weekend and it was either Masters of the Universe, or Sheep detectives. DH not keen on going to see Sheep Detectives, but I think MOTU would be too long for my youngest child, and was thinking they’d like Sheep Detectives more.

I went to see it yesterday with dh. We both loved it.

DD (20) and I saw this last week. We laughed and cried at it. I work with sheep and it was actually so accurate on some of their mannerisms. Very sweet film.

I really laughed so much
I loved the bit with the sheep in churchyard and them saying it's where God lives and how he's a shepherd and also a lamb!
And LOVED the sheep
But it was so sad
I cried
I cried at the notion of them choosing to forget things because it made them feel bad, I cried at the sheep dying and when the scene where they said 'it's our memory that keeps the ones we love alive' and at the end and probably other parts too.
And even my daughter cried and said it was really sad so it must have been affecting!

I disagree with the people who said it's easy watching

It made me think of my dad who's not with us anymore

We were actually the only ones in the cinema which was good

I totally agree @purpleme12 . I loved it, but found some of it almost unbearably sad, and the idea of the sheep choosing to lose all their happy memories of somebody they loved because the grief at their loss was so painful they couldn't stand it was heartbreaking. Ditto the tiny lamb ostracised because he was different.

It wasn't an easy watch, but it did also make me laugh a lot, and I loved seeing Patrick Stewart and Bryan Cranston in sheep form. And I found the ending powerful and uplifting - the cinema was full (of adults; I didn't see any children there) and everyone I saw walked out smiling.

Plus who doesn't want to hear the Proclaimers? 😀

I enjoyed it a lot more than I was expecting to (went with DD & some kids’ film are tedious). It was surprisingly funny and very moving.

I watched this on Prime last night. Its been “one of those” weeks quite aside from the heat and I was in the mood for low brain fodder.

It was great fun, much better than I expected - its complete nonsense but the casting really makes it. Much better than the dire film of Thursday Murder Club.

The village and villagers reminded me of Hot Fuzz 😂
