I cannot decide if this is a good film or so-bad- it's- good.

Leaving the...relaxed approach to causing brain death and iffy resuscitation, it's really quite bonkers.

Medical school in what appears to be a large church in middle of being renovated during an apocalypse.

Hospital and medical school have odd predilection for red bulbs in all the lights.

Smoke emitted from anywhere for any reason.

Kevin Bacon abseils out of his dorm window when there are perfectly good stairs.

KB rings up old classmate whom he bullied parents out of the blue, who then cheerfully give him their child's address.

Just been documented as brain dead for four minutes - brought back with no brain damage!

Just been resuscitated with difficulty? Here's a blanket, let's go for breakfast!

I do love this film but it is utterly bizarre!

I loved this film so much back in the day but I can hardly remember any of it. I must re-watch. Where did you find it?

Purplecatshopaholic · 26/04/2026 19:21

I remember enjoying it, but defo think it’s a batshit storyline. Must rewatch it.

Had a craving and got it off Amazon for about £5.

"Batshit storyline " describes it perfectly!

I remember absolutely loving it at the time. Obsessed. But I imagine I might think differently now. I'm very careful about re-watching old films I loved, in case I spoil them 😁

oldnormalplease · 26/04/2026 19:57

I went to see this at the cinema when it came out, and sat behind a woman who watched the whole film through her cardigan, to shield her from the scary bits. That's the main thing I remember about it.

Giraffeandthedog · 26/04/2026 19:57

I loved this film! I think I remember seeing a trailer and waiting for it to come out at the cinema 😱

cobolli · 26/04/2026 19:59

Loved it at the time, in hindsight it was such nonsense- enjoyable though!!

FlyingUnicornWings · 26/04/2026 20:01

Loved it - remake is terrible. Original all the way.

Youthinkyouareaniconoclast · 26/04/2026 21:32

I'm foxed as to why they keep calling each other "doctor" - they are students and unqualified!

I found it very scary - particularly the boy in the red hood, and Julia Robert's dad. Yes, definitely some willing suspension of belief needed - but it was a film that stayed with me - I'd really like to see it again now!
The remake is not a patch on the original - as usual - but perhaps that's because I'm a 90s girl. They just don't seem to make films like they did in the 90s...

TheGrimSmile · 26/04/2026 22:40

I enjoyed this at the cinema when it came out in my first year of uni. I think I'll watch it again..

ThePM · 26/04/2026 22:44

Do you know what’s scary - realising that the guy who designed defibrillators watched this movie, and thought “I’ll put in a Check heartbeat function, because yes people will give themselves a fatal shock for a laugh.”

mondaytosunday · 27/04/2026 00:22

It was a big hit back then with Julia Robert, Kevin Bacon and Keifer Sutherland at their peak (and weren’t Julia and Keifer dating at the time)?

I’m not medical at all, but I always thought (from watching tv dramas, mostly) that you can’t shock a flatline rhythm. Only a chaotic dysregulated one?

You are correct.

It's also advisable to protect an airway and not leave someone without oxygen when they are being resuscitatedConfused

So bad it was good!

BridgetJonesV2 · 27/04/2026 21:07

I remember it really freaked me out at the time as a young teen, I had nightmares about the lad in the red jacket for ages afterwards. Watching again as an adult, I felt a bit embarrassed as it was really stupid Grin
