AIBU to cancel our entire Sky package? The price is a joke.

Just sat down to look at our monthly budget and our TV/broadband bill is making me feel sick (over €110/£100 a month!).
My husband insists he needs his sports channels, and the kids want their movies, but I'm putting my foot down. I was chatting to a mum at the school gates and she said they completely ditched Sky and use a "private server" on their Firestick for a fraction of the price, and it has literally everything.
AIBU to just cancel Sky and force my husband to figure out this private streaming thing? Has anyone else here done this? Is it reliable?

IPTV!
£70 a year and you get every single tv channel there is also sky, Netflix, movies before they’re even out in the cinema

Missingducks · 06/04/2026 07:57

Definitely give them a ring and talk about what you actually want on the package and tell them you are thinking of leaving as so many have recommended NowTV

ChocolateCinderToffee · 06/04/2026 08:04

My house is a Murdoch-free zone. I’ve had occasional subscriptions to Netflix etc when I wanted to watch something specific but none at the moment. So I just pay for my tv licence. Still more telly I want to watch than I have time for.

DH wants football and F1 so we’re stuck with Sky, or so he tells me.

So he pays for it out of his personal spending money, not family money. But either way, he's a fool to not negotiate the price. Modern day illustration of more money than sense.

Mine was up for renewal and they wouldn't offer me a better deal so I cancelled the TV. It was utterly painful tbh but less than 24 hours they called back with an offer I was happy with and im paying much less and they gave me sky sports free for 2 years. I didn't have this before but we do watch it now. Also Netflix as well which I previously had. When you cancel they will try to offer you tons of stuff but fully cancel then see what they offer if you still want it.

I cancelled after 25 years with them expecting them to offer me an amazing deal and I got bugger all.

piscofrisco · 06/04/2026 08:25

I did. Then we got sky glass. Which was cheaper until the kids started adding things on. Though we aren’t quite as the levels we were at yet.

CatWithThreeLegs · 06/04/2026 08:27

We ditched Sky over 10 years ago and have never been tempted to go back. We have Netflix and use that a lot.

PuppyMonkey · 06/04/2026 08:45

Don’t worry, you lot doing the dodgy firesticks will end up killing the industry altogether so there won’t be anything decent for any of us to watch any more. Problem solved.

CherryogDog · 06/04/2026 08:50

I think this question has been asked already, but haven't seen an answer, but can you get a set top box which records?

We have the NowTV app - you can cancel when you want and they often have offers on. I’m paying £10 for movies £10 for the entertainment package and £25 for Sky Sports at the moment

Go to cancel the now tv movies and entertainment, they will offer you a discount. I do this quite regularly I’m paying £3.99 each per month for 6 months atm.
Sports will also do this although the £25 may be an offer as it’s usually about £35 per month

Yeah, no. I used to be able to watch world class cricket and motorsport for free on terrestrial tv, and now I can only do that if I pay tens of pounds a month to frankly one of the most unethical bastards in the modern age? Funnily enough I have no problem sailing the seven seas. Ahoy there!

Freysimo · 06/04/2026 08:59

Can you record with NOW tv or is it all streamed? We've got Sky Q and I like being able to record and then skip adverts.

ChickenBananaBanana · 04/04/2026 12:11

If you're happy to use something dodgy and illegal yeah do it

Not happy, but why not? Sky and the BBC have been ripping us off for years. I’d rather give my hard earned money to someone saving me money. £70 a year or £100 per month is a no brainer.

You just buy a fire stick and and contact ‘dodgy’ ( I call him a lifesaver) guy and bobs your uncle.

You can prob get a brilliant cheap deal as a new sky customer- and HBO is free now.

Thank you. Yes that's worth checking out!

I’ve also been reading that the police /authorities are cracking down on dodgy stick users……not just the people who sell them but the people using them so that would really put me off even if the moral aspect didn’t.

‘Moral aspect’ is Sky and the BBC moral?

So why did you keep on paying to use those services if you felt ‘ripped off’? Seems like a lazy excuse to justify yourself.

I think it is like Sky Stream where there is no recording mechanism, but everything is available to stream after it has aired. So the downside is that you have to watch the adverts (although on Sky Stream you can pay £6 a month for ad skip).

That would definitely be a disadvantage, but I'll see what Sky can offer taking the ad skip into account. Thanks (didn't know about not being able to ff the ads, but makes sense if streaming, wouldn't have known about ad skip!)

You implied it. Why else would you mention Sky have been ripping “us” off?

Well I was talking about the decent TV programmes not boring sports TBF.

Cycling is on TNT sports which although is part of HBO is not on the same bit as the HBO Max series and films, you have to pay separately, usually at least about £20-30 for TNT sports. Cycling used to be on ITV and Eurosport so was free or low cost. DH is going to have to fork out for TNT because of this, it's certainly not on the free HBO max.

the Murdochs don't have anything to do with Sky anymore.

It was sold to Comcast in 2018 - a completely different company. Even by 2018 they only had a minority interest in it anyway, but they're long gone now.

It's one of the reasons GB News was created - because Sky News was seen as being identical to BBC News since the 2018 sale.

silproblem · 06/04/2026 11:38

I pay for NOW, I don't have the sports package but pay £12 for ad free, multiple devices and movies

RedRiverShore6 · 06/04/2026 12:20

A lot of people with expensive Sky will have the sports, Sky Sports, F1 and TNT all cost a small fortune to subscribe to
