AIBU to cancel our entire Sky package? The price is a joke.

Just sat down to look at our monthly budget and our TV/broadband bill is making me feel sick (over €110/£100 a month!).
My husband insists he needs his sports channels, and the kids want their movies, but I'm putting my foot down. I was chatting to a mum at the school gates and she said they completely ditched Sky and use a "private server" on their Firestick for a fraction of the price, and it has literally everything.
AIBU to just cancel Sky and force my husband to figure out this private streaming thing? Has anyone else here done this? Is it reliable?

You have to be very careful when streaming sports. My husband has done it a few times but these sites are dodgy af.
You’ll be watching a buffered game that’s slow and terrible quality and then suddenly up
pops unsolicited porn.if you are happy for your kids to see that then fine.

I’m amazed people are still paying high prices for Sky TV. I pay £4.99 a month for Now, which includes Sky Sports and all HBO / HBO Max content - the best TV shows that’s ever been made. I would and have never illegally watch TV - it’s theft.

Wow that's cheap I pay £20 for sky sports!

I just checked our sky bill, £143 per month! We have all the channels but the only ones that are really watched are the sports once by dh and ds, the dds occasionally watch something on one of the film channels. Sky tv is a non negotiable for the sports fans in the house so I don’t really care, dh pays for it because he wants it. Additionally we also pay for Netflix, prime, Apple TV and something else.
the biggest joke is that dh likes the boxing and will put extra for fights ☠️

Not finished reading the thread, so someone may have told you this. But you get Netflix, Disney Plus
and now HBO Max for “free” as part of your Sky package. So definitely don’t be paying separately for Netflix too!

Are you within the window to cancel, you need to be out of contract or they will charge you termination fees. Otherwise if you have Sky Q or Sky+HD you can cancel up to 30 days after your price rise email without termination fees. These emails went out in Feb/March

Shatandfattered · 06/04/2026 06:15

Now tv recently booted me over to their parent company..... SKY 🫩

DeftGoldHedgehog · 06/04/2026 06:17

I would get Now TV, but don't you have to buy all your boxes again? We have Q in three rooms.

Now is an app nowadays, you will just need to return your Q boxes to Sky on cancellation, they will send packaging for this. I think in the past Now did have some sort of box which you had to buy.

Ok thanks. What about recording programmes, can you do that?

addictedtotheflats · 06/04/2026 06:33

People on here make me laugh, everyone I know uses a "private server". Who on earth in this cost of living crisis is paying £100 a month for Sky when you can pay £30-£50 a year for the same thing.

"Its illegal" you know what should be illegal? Being ripped off by multi billion pound corporations to be able to watch a premier league football match!!

RedRock41 · 06/04/2026 06:36

Sky TV bills >£100 are insane! Absolutely crazy. My pal used to ring up 📞 every few months to say she was leaving so they’d give her a better deal, except one time the operative said ‘ok’ and said he’d arrange to cut her package so she had to backtrack lol.

snowymarbles · 06/04/2026 06:37

@Tillow4everi think you only get the one / two user subscription with sky - I remember back when I had it it didn’t work out to do with them as we had the family one.

No, it's like using Netflix, it's an app on your TV or streaming stick.

Ah possibly! Good point. Although I wonder if there’s the option to just pay the difference to upgrade?

Ring them and pick the 'thinking of leaving' option and they'll offer you a better price. My MIL has done this and come out much better. Have an idea of what you want to pay ready.

We do this ever time. 2 years in and currently pay £65 for sky tv, sky sports, BB & phone (no movies but it wouldn't be much to add on).

If no deal is forthcoming, cancel & they'll ring you back with an offer.

Redo your entire budget anyway & negotiate with your family ie. OK, we can have the TV but you'll have to cancel something else.

Do they now? I couldn't definitely say anything about the TV provisions of anyone I know except perhaps DM who has some sort of (legal) Sky package, which she always gets a discount on because she rings up and threatens to cancel so they offer her a deal.

I have no idea if anyone has a private server, whatever that is, and in most cases, would be extremely surprised if they did. Most people, if anything, tend to have Netflix or one or two of the streaming platforms.

topcat2026 · 06/04/2026 07:10

It’s hardly a big deal to pay up to a tenner a month for some TV content. Well, unless you’re cheap freeloader.

DH is dyslexic and "can't read small print" according to him, so he keeps seeing things on screen then adds it... so currently we've got Movies, Sports, Netflix, Disney, Paramount, Apple TV and broadband through Sky and the bill is £180 a month. We've also got 2 mini boxes added to the main box. Then he moans like hell at the bill every month but he's the idiot adding it. Thankfully it's one of the bills that comes out of his account. I've given up trying to remove things, I don't have the patience for their indian call centre.

Edited

Tell him with one phone call to cancel you'll get this for <£80 per month & that's £100 pm to overpay the mortgage or put into S&S ISA - over 20 years that's a minimum of £40,000 😱

hahabahbag · 06/04/2026 07:28

I’m paying far less for Sky (not cinema) the trick is to negotiate and threaten to leave

hahabahbag · 06/04/2026 07:33

But do remember that many of us with Sky are using them for broadband too, of my bill, half is fibre broadband and still it’s under £70. That includes Netflix, hbo max and Disney apps now each over £10 a month I think to buy so £38 for tv isn’t bad

herbetta · 06/04/2026 07:36

ILoveDaffodills · 04/04/2026 14:21

This is probably a daft question!

but does NOW TV have a recording box?

I currently have Virgin TiVo & I watch practically everything recorded. But the monthly payment is getting ridiculous

I also need to add HBO as Tour de France is no longer going to be Free to Air ...

You can prob get a brilliant cheap deal as a new sky customer- and HBO is free now.

PersephoneParlormaid · 06/04/2026 07:38

DH wants football and F1 so we’re stuck with Sky, or so he tells me.

Idstillratherbepaddleboarding · 06/04/2026 07:39

We cancelled ours about 2 years ago when they wanted £80+ a month for it and haven’t missed it at all. We also have Sky Sports through Now TV and there’s another sports app that DH and DS watch motoGP on n but we get that free as part of a package with something else (excuse my ignorance, I don’t care about sports on TV 🤣).

People who aren't criminals make you laugh? People who steal content are absolutely no different to people who shoplift. Scumbags.

ProudAmberTurtle · 06/04/2026 07:44

Proton VPN is free. You can use it to change your geolocation and I think legally buy a cheaper package containing movies and sports from another country, even though they broadcast the same movies and sports.

I wouldn't pay the BBC or Sky a penny - both a total rip off and run by people who hate you!
