Just watched Avatar, why do people insist on attending the cinema to sit there and talk the ENTIRE time? And I don’t mean quietly either! Unfortunately I had the pleasure of sitting amongst two utter twats for the longest film ever 🤣 they sat there full on talking, on their phones taking pictures and texting and vaping and also sitting in seats that they didn’t pay for.

When I politely told them to “SHHHHHHHH” rather than launching myself over to their seat, I was met with a sarcastic “oh sorry mate sorry, fucking hell” from the boy.

They then had a cheek to continue talking after half an hour of silence and then leave making these most noise ever, 20 minutes before the film ended.

I refuse to believe they are THAT thick that they don’t understand to stfu when in the cinema??

Maybe that’s that they should do for the cinemas now! 😂 people just cannot be without their phones it’s ridiculous. I understand if you need to keep an eye on it for various reasons but majority of the time it’s just looking at things that can wait! X

Or step outside! Ive been in the cinema where people have had phone conversations at full volume till been asked to leave.

Another a couple were having a argument and then one of them walked out..and must have phoned the other cause they then were talking on the phone. Then came back it for it to carry on till they got asked to leave.

And then watching Quiet Place again conversation at full volume!

Oh my god, that’s awful!! I would be soooo annoyed!! I didn’t realise how often it opens, I would be put off going ever again!! Such a piss take! X

I b went to see Hamnet and literally no one moved, there was no talking / rustling /toilet trips. It was wonderful.

Brefugee · 30/01/2026 13:08

if that happens to me (and a trip to the cinema is a Big Thing because it is so far away) i complain to the management and ask for a refund (I don't wait for them to offer vouchers or whatever, i ask for my money back. in cash.

But i will first say, loudly, to the disturber, that they should shut up or leave. Sometimes it works.

Rightly so! Maybe I should do the same 😩🤣

i have grey hair and menopause rage. I just won't put up with it these days.
(to be fair, though, it is one reason i very rarely go to the pictures now)

It’s a shame that so many people no longer go
for those reasons. But I also don’t blame them as it’s infuriating

i make sure to tell the staff when i leave, if there has been chat etc.
and if there has, that it is the reason we have gone from one or 2 visits per month to maybe 1 or 2 per year.

Mostly they are indifferent although the last few times i have been there have been very very few people at any of the screens (I check because i'm nosey like that)

The only films I go to see at the cinema now are the kind of art house things that attract Serious Cinema People. You don’t tend to get mobile phones, repeated toilet trips and babbling from the sort of crowd who watch ponderous Icelandic historical epics.

I gave up on more popular films after a showing one hot summer day where the men behind us rested their bare sweaty knees on the top of our seat backs. There was a post on here just after about eating McDonald’s in the cinema and I realised I was done paying money to be in confined spaces with selfish twats.

This does mean I now go to the cinema once every two years or so, where I used to be a member of my local.

Miss Manner, an etiquette expert once wrote that it's rude to say "SHH!" She said, deadpan, that one should politely say, "Excuse me, but could you please keep your voices down?" - and that will make other people go "SHH!"

Can one ever get ushers to intervene? I think I did that once, when someone - an elderly proper-looking middle-class person - told me very viciously to fuck off.

Serpentstooth · 31/01/2026 07:58

I would have asked for a refund and left. I'd also be bloody furious.

AllJoyAndNoFun · 31/01/2026 08:08

I went to the theatre last night and I swear the woman next to me did not sit still for more than 5 seconds in 2.5 hours. The worst thing is she had these really long nails that she was tapping against each other. When she wasn’t doing that she was fiddling with her hair, rearranging her coat and bag or running her talons up and down her arms. I don’t know if she had some sort of condition but then why would you go to a London theatre when you’re jammed in next to randoms- at least get an aisle seat so you only annoy the person you came with?

ScarlettSunset · 31/01/2026 08:14

I hate that too, and have left the cinema and asked for a refund before when someone has been ruining the film for everyone.
That said, I once got shushed in the cinema by the people in front for chatting to my friend while we were waiting for it all to start and lights still on and people drifting in....but yeah, for me, once it has started, I expect people to shut up and pay attention to the film, and remember there are other people there!

The people of Norwich must be very well-behaved cos I have honestly never experienced this!

I have to tell you that people from Norwich are bloody awful on trains though. My train starts and ends in Norwich and those are the most entitled passengers I've seen. Bags all over the seats, pretending to be asleep, demanding a single passenger move so they can sit together....

BitterTits · 31/01/2026 10:23

This is the way that many pupils behave in class, then their parents have a go when you deal with their behaviour. I wouldn't be brave enough to challenge it in public.

IfyouStealMySunshine · 31/01/2026 11:03

I use my o2 priority tickets 2 for £7 at the local Vue and generally go on a Monday night.
I find it’s usually well behaved cinema goers that evening hardly any teens, or big groups. Plus because it’s hardly cost me anything I feel less angry about it instead of the £40 upwards a ticket for the theatre for people to be rustling/chatting. It makes my blood boil.

Yeah they are pretty anti-social and slightly odd people. I’m from the north myself.
