Truthfully - I was disappointed. Not sure what I was expecting; maybe more of the striving and skill and craft directly related to becoming a great table tennis player - like The Queen’s Gambit. But there was nothing of that. Nothing to suggest the roots of his talent or how he had honed it.

It’s not always a fault if a film is episodic, but this just seemed cobbled together, killing time until the climactic battle.

I would have put ‘No spoilers’ in the thread title - but really there was nothing to spoil. It wasn’t terrible; production, cast, acting, costume were all fine, but there was no story at all.

I will be very annoyed indeed if this wins any prizes that ought to go to ‘Sinners’ or ‘One Battle After Another’. But maybe I just didn’t get it.

Marty Supreme review – Timothée Chalamet a smash in spectacular screwball ping-pong nightmare

Following every dizzying spin of Chalamet’s table tennis hustler, Josh Safdie’s whip-crack comedy serves sensational shots – and a smart return by Gwyneth Paltrow

I guess by the end of the weekend somebody be else will have seen it?

LoudSnoringDog · 27/12/2025 07:38

I’m hoping to see it within the next couple of weeks. I really rate TC as an actor and generally love most of his films. I’ll let you know how I get on!

berlinbaby2025 · 27/12/2025 08:23

I’m feeling a bit apprehensive, as much as I like to see the films up for awards consideration each year. I generally don’t like long films and this is on for 2.5 hours!

wheredidtheteago · 27/12/2025 08:31

I’m seeing it New Year’s Day - will come back and update!

Christmaseree · 27/12/2025 17:22

I’m seeing it tomorrow and will update with my rating.

TheLOUDNESS · 27/12/2025 17:27

Excellent!

I give it 3 out of 5 sars. It is ok. It looks great but as you say it is all over the place. It feels a little precocious - as though it is made by incredibly gifted young people who aren’t yet quite in command of their gifts but believe that they are. Chalamet is a case in point. He is unable to convey the real struggle and desperation that this man is reared in and which fuels his ludicrous ambition. The best actors in it are the older ones like Gwyneth Paltrow and the guy who plays her wealthy husband. He isn’t even a trained actor and it was a mistake to use him and others in the film who are also untrained because they ooze authenticity and show up Chalamet’s lack of it. All that said I quite enjoyed it, but like you I will be seething if it wins prizes over Sinners.

Cismyfatarse · 28/12/2025 12:14

Saw it last night. Really enjoyed it. Loved the baby but hate an ambiguous ending. And the dog stuff was superb and hilarious and awful. Most of the minor characters are non-actors chosen to look authentic (teeth etc) which is impressive. Shows how hard it is to get on, even with hard work and talent, if you don’t have money.

TheLOUDNESS · 28/12/2025 12:37

Hmm …😄 To me ‘the dog stuff’ was an entirely different film. It might have been a good film - a thriller maybe. But it didn’t belong here - and I felt annoyed that it was taking up my time unnecessarily.

One thing DS commented was that the trailer suggests it is about a table tennis career / rags to riches when it is really a sort of New York Guy Ritchie film. So, if you were expecting it to deliver on the trailer, you would be disappointed. Did love the ripple of amusement / excitement in the cinema in the bum scene.

TheLOUDNESS · 28/12/2025 16:14

I do think the trailer was slightly misleading, yes!

I thought Egypt would be a story - but it was essentially nothing.

I loved it, I’m giving it 8.5/10.

patooties · 28/12/2025 16:20

It was tosh - and about 50 mins too long.

MamsKnit · 28/12/2025 17:29

I think Chalamet’s PR efforts for this film are a bit off track. He needs to stop promoting the film as though he is still Marty Mauser. He must have stopped filming ages ago. He needs to re-grow his locks, shave the bum fluff moustache, and stop wearing the stupid merch. The more different he looks and behaves to Marty in real life, the more people will think he is a great actor who can transform. And it is not a good look to keep proclaiming the greatness of the film in the manner of Mauser. We don’t give a crap what he thinks about it. It is up to the audience to decide if they like it or not.

I really enjoyed it. I would give it 4/5. The dog side quest was the only low point for me and I could have watched another hour. I think the story dropped us in the middle and ended in the middle. I don't get people who say TC can't act. Every film he is in he is wholly believable as that character. I didn't realise a lot of the other characters were played by non actors but this makes sense as many of them were not believable to me but it felt intentional.

PullTheBricksDown · 28/12/2025 23:02

Opens New Year's Day near me so I'll go that weekend. I was won over to Chalamet when I saw him in A Complete Unknown, which I thought was a brilliant performance. Will return then!

soupmaker · 29/12/2025 00:33

Me and DD1 saw it tonight. We both loved it. Casting was brilliant. I liked that it was chaotic, like the main character himself. There are bits that made everyone in our packed screening gasp it was so offensive. It is hilarious and nuts. TC’s performance is great, his character is awful but I found I still rooted for him. I think it’ll pick up loads of awards.

soupmaker · 29/12/2025 00:34

Oh, and the soundtrack is fantastic.

That was the best thing about. And the cinematography.

I agree with all of this, Marty’s life was getting crazier and crazier and the more it started spiralling the more I wanted him to get to Japan.
I loved the whole necklace thing, I thought it was so funny when he asked for another one.

I also used to think that Chalamet was an outstanding actor. I still do. I first saw him in Little Women and was so impressed that I sought out his work and watched Call Me By Your Name and was blown away by that. I think that by chasing big fame, money and an Oscar win he is not properly nurturing that talent and, for me, it is a case of too much too soon. I am glad that he didn't win the Oscar for the Dylan film. Adrien Brody was a much more worthy winner imo. Brody has such substance that you can see the character's whole history and the depth of his pain in his eyes, etched on his face and body. He embodied the years of suffering of that character. I thought Chalamet was of that calibre but haven't seen it of late. I am put off by his constantly going on about "all the hard work he put in" - 6 years of learning to play table tennis, years learning the guitar and piano. You can see the fruits of all that in performance, but for me the heart is now missing and he needs to go back to basics and allow his talent to grow. You can't cheat these things.

His performance in MS could have made it a masterpiece, but it is a difficult role to play because MM is a hugely complex character - you have to find those moments when we are given glimpses of the vulnerability behind the character's swagger. Even the jokes that make people in the cinema gasp are rooted in a history of pain. Because he doesn't quite capture MM's complexity scenes like the (SPOILER ALERT) beating scene didn't quite land for me and neither did the very last moments of the film. I never forgot that I was watching TS the acting wunderkind. Perhaps he is too exposed at this point. Nevertheless I was left with the feeling that the film was a very sophisticated caper movie when there are hints that it could have been something far far greater.

tennissquare · 29/12/2025 23:08

I’ve seen it this evening and loved it.

MamsKnit · 30/12/2025 09:06

Also, did anyone really believe that GPs character would fall for him? That was even more unbelievable to me than Nicole Kidman falling for Harris Dickinson in Babygirl, although Dickinson redeemed himself by giving her a sexy(ish) lap dance.

Hollywood at this point is making a mockery of middle-aged actresses. I hope Paltrow gets nominated for best supporting actress.

I don’t think any of it is believable, that’s why it’s fun.
