Truthfully - I was disappointed. Not sure what I was expecting; maybe more of the striving and skill and craft directly related to becoming a great table tennis player - like The Queen’s Gambit. But there was nothing of that. Nothing to suggest the roots of his talent or how he had honed it.

It’s not always a fault if a film is episodic, but this just seemed cobbled together, killing time until the climactic battle.

I would have put ‘No spoilers’ in the thread title - but really there was nothing to spoil. It wasn’t terrible; production, cast, acting, costume were all fine, but there was no story at all.

I will be very annoyed indeed if this wins any prizes that ought to go to ‘Sinners’ or ‘One Battle After Another’. But maybe I just didn’t get it.

Marty Supreme review – Timothée Chalamet a smash in spectacular screwball ping-pong nightmare

Following every dizzying spin of Chalamet’s table tennis hustler, Josh Safdie’s whip-crack comedy serves sensational shots – and a smart return by Gwyneth Paltrow

Now, now, peeps …

(Has completely forgotten I started this thread!)

I adored the stress and the soundtrack. No chance of napping in this film. Even dh stayed awake which is a good review in itself for such a long film.

I read about it being compared to Uncut Gems and I can see why. Also agree about similarities to The Bear. Gwyneth P was superb.

I found the babies crying at the end really intense and stressful. I guess it was designed to have you exit the cinema with your heart pounding. Would happily go and see it again.

Your opinion insulted anyone who enjoyed the film or thought Chalament’s performance was good by directly accusing them of being besotted fans. There was no need for you to go there, you were perfectly entitled to just not like this film or the acting for whatever reasons just like half the people on this thread already had.

I am not a besotted fan and I found myself rooting for Timmy Tee (which he once called himself by the way). I stand by what I say that in my opinion he is reaching a level of fame which means that he isn't able to disappear into characters anymore. He is becoming a celebrity. But perhaps all famous actors risk this. It's probably why DiCaprio has resisted celebrity status and remains a film star. I was in a minority of one who felt this about Chalamet even with his Bob Dylan film. I really hope I didn't insult anyone who enjoyed the film. I didn't dislike the film. I quite enjoyed it, but for me it is not up there with the greats - and neither is he. Not yet.

I nodded off after about 20 mins i think, I was tired, the cinema was cery warm and ot was the Vie recliners. Missed the bit where he robs the shop but it didn't make much difference.

I liked @MamsKnit’s contribution to this thread about Chalamet to be honest and I can see what you’re saying. I thought he was good, he was okay, but don’t think he quite portrayed the grit as well as it could have been

billiongulls · 15/01/2026 08:12

I really liked it but too long. I hate long films though

Edited

I agree with this.
I thought he was excellent in the Bob Dylan film, but then seeing this the characters aren’t at their core that different. There was a softness about him that belied the hard boy from the streets role.
I have no particular feelings about TC as an actor either way.

Which is a completely valid observation. It was the insinuation that the only reason anyone might think otherwise is because they’re wrapped up in fandom that I pushed back on. Apparently pushing back on that is much meaner than the original insinuation!

Yeah I hear you too. Was that the intended insinuation though?

I guess we gotta be careful not to be in a bit of an echo chamber and be respectful of each other’s opinions.

That was your reading of it. I didn’t say it. If it was what I meant I would not have insinuated. I would have said it. It feels weird to have someone put words into your mouth tbh and then pick a fight with you over something you didn’t say. In any case can we please drop it now? This is a discussion about a film and TC the actor, not about me.

MookieCat · 25/01/2026 18:59

Saw it today. I have deliberately avoided reading much about the film as wanted to go in fresh. I am a big fan of TC, admit freely. I think he is an extraordinary talent, but the maternal side in me hopes that his star will not burn out too soon.

I did not much enjoy the film. I thought it could have done with a decent edit. And I thought that about A Complete Unknown as well. I saw it with DS1 who is a film buff and he said 'None of the characters were likeable... not even the dog.... well, maybe the baby but his genes don't bode well either...'.

I loved the myriad of cameos, as I love a good inside joke and cameo anyway.

I came out thinking I'd not watch it again. But it's sitting with me somehow and I have now read some reviews and am thinking I might want to go back and see it again with a different set of eyes.

Foggytree · 26/01/2026 19:54

Went yesterday and liked it. Though went on the basis that it was a comedy and it wasn't an out and out comedy.
Yes it probably was a bit long, but I loved the manic energy it had.

Wasn't actually aware of the cameos.

Also, did anyone really believe that GPs character would fall for him? That was even more unbelievable to me than Nicole Kidman falling for Harris Dickinson in Babygirl, although Dickinson redeemed himself by giving her a sexy(ish) lap dance.

Hollywood at this point is making a mockery of middle-aged actresses. I hope Paltrow gets nominated for best supporting actress.

I totally agree. He’s just not very sexy.,

SleepQuest33 · 26/01/2026 22:37

I loved it. Too tired to expand on that 😂but just wanted to share as we appear to be divided

I don’t think she “fell for him.” She was bored and resentful, trapped in a golden handcuffs marriage with a Class A jerk, and terrified she had nothing left of her old glamour and success. Marty’s flattery and outrageous hutzpah came at a low point and she used him to salve her misery, which backfired when her vanity project play was panned anyway.

Everyone wanted more than they had or could get in some way, but they all let their wants dominate and excuse their behaviour.

colouringindoors · 06/03/2026 00:22

Manic film, as relentless as a game of table tennis! Wouldn't necessarily say I enjoyed it, but it was impressive in its energy and pretty original. I think Chalmet is really good - this, following his portrayal of Bob Dylan shows his singular determination to become the role - learning table tennis, guitar... As others have said, great soundtrack.
