Marty Supreme

Truthfully - I was disappointed. Not sure what I was expecting; maybe more of the striving and skill and craft directly related to becoming a great table tennis player - like The Queen’s Gambit. But there was nothing of that. Nothing to suggest the roots of his talent or how he had honed it.

It’s not always a fault if a film is episodic, but this just seemed cobbled together, killing time until the climactic battle.

I would have put ‘No spoilers’ in the thread title - but really there was nothing to spoil. It wasn’t terrible; production, cast, acting, costume were all fine, but there was no story at all.

I will be very annoyed indeed if this wins any prizes that ought to go to ‘Sinners’ or ‘One Battle After Another’. But maybe I just didn’t get it.

Marty Supreme review – Timothée Chalamet a smash in spectacular screwball ping-pong nightmare

Following every dizzying spin of Chalamet’s table tennis hustler, Josh Safdie’s whip-crack comedy serves sensational shots – and a smart return by Gwyneth Paltrow

I don’t think any of it is believable, that’s why it’s fun.

I hear you. That's nice.

TokyoSushi · 01/01/2026 14:08

I’m going later this afternoon, looking forward to it!

Ohcrap082024 · 01/01/2026 14:37

I’m very mixed on Marty Supreme.

TC was very good, as you would expect. I liked the play on the rooting for Marty but not really because he was so unlikeable as a human being.

It felt like it was a film trying to be very clever (with lots of little off shoots for comedic effect) but it didn’t quite land where it should have. I only laughed once.

Too long by at least 30 minutes. GP was good as was Odessa A’zion. I would have liked more of the friendship between Marty and Wally (Tyler the Creator).

I would give it 3 out of 5. It’s not the film of the year. It might do well for awards for TC, editing, cinematography etc.

Me and DD1 saw it tonight. We both loved it. Casting was brilliant. I liked that it was chaotic, like the main character himself. There are bits that made everyone in our packed screening gasp it was so offensive. It is hilarious and nuts. TC’s performance is great, his character is awful but I found I still rooted for him. I think it’ll pick up loads of awards.

I have just come from seeing it and loved it! I feel the same as @soupmaker in that he was unlikeable but rooting for him all the way. I loved the performances and the story. If people have not seen it already I recommend Uncut Gems which is on Netflix which is by the same person either alone or with their brother. I loved that they used contemporary music and the cinematography was fab.

TheLOUDNESS · 01/01/2026 16:43

Inevitably, as soon as I get rid of Netflix I find it’s absolutely necessary to my life …

I shall resist.

Just back, we absolutely loved it and were also rooting for Marty, agree it could have been about 30 minutes shorter, mainly through cutting out the stuff with the dog - brilliant though, sure it will win awards!

rookiemere · 03/01/2026 07:59

I saw this last night, very mixed feelings. Definitely too long and his character was so intrinsically unpleasant it was hard to root for him. I agree with the poster upthread who said it needed a better actor to bring it to life, which is strange as I thought he was amazing in the Dylan film. The plot lines were so tedious I assume they were based on real life recounts.
For such a long film there were lots of unfinished business. Did the coloured balls invention go anywhere? Did he settle down?

The cinema was full so that was nice for a change. I don’t know if it was just because of the date and people wanting something to do, or genuinely wanting to see the movie.

TheLOUDNESS · 03/01/2026 11:26

In my last year of cinema going Marty Supreme has been the only film I’ve watched in a full autitorium. (Which meant I had to ask people twice to switch off their phones.😡)

I’d say it was a combination of Boxing Day and a heavily promoted premier.

Oh and I found the 80s soundtrack confusing. I am an 80s child myself but because of the music I found it hard to keep myself in the right era iyswim.

That’s one of the things I loved about the film, the use of contemporary music.

Me too.

I do find it interesting that views on it are so polarised. It’s the same on Rotten Tomatoes, many critics have said it’s amazing but a few found it lacking. I didn’t like Uncut Gems - managed about 20 minutes of it before I gave up.

Cheguevarahamster · 03/01/2026 18:16

Went to see it yesterday. It was not what I was expecting. I was expecting a typical sports underdog story. But I loved it. It was exhilarating, mad and funny. Marty was deeply unlikeable but you ended up rooting for him as he didn't give up. And I thought the soundtrack was inspired. 9/10 for me

RayonSunrise · 04/01/2026 22:29

I loved that it wasn’t a typical “sports triumph” movie - more a character study of a pretty morality-free little hustler with amazing huzpah. I routed for him even as I was telling myself “he’s a total amoral prick!”

Good, complicated performance by TC, though I can’t say I’m a particular fan. My teenage DD is though, and was a bit fluttery over the paddle scene…

supermodel · 04/01/2026 23:29

Mixed feelings on it too. Agree the main character was so unlikeable I wasn't rooting for him at all.

Hoolihan · 04/01/2026 23:39

Saw it yesterday and LOVED it. Was absolutely buzzing afterwards! Found it really original, full of brillaint detail and nerve-shreddingly joyous. Totally agree that the soundtrack is fantastic.

TheLOUDNESS · 05/01/2026 05:41

Nerve shredding is exactly what I felt about Sinners, about One Battle, even about Sentimental Value. With Marty Supreme my main emotion while watching it was why am I here?

One of my party fell asleep! I don’t know what demographic you belong to Op but I do wonder if the film appeals to a younger demographic. Although, saying that, the young person in my party didn’t think it was great either although they quite enjoyed it. We all thought it was ok but as you say not great film making like Sinners or Sentimental Value. I haven’t seen One Battle yet but will try to do that this week.

ChaChingCherry · 05/01/2026 16:45

I am back from watching it this afternoon. I laughed alot ... not many other people did though. It was bonkers, chaotic and all over the place much like Marty's life. I may need to see it again as I like to see films twice. The music soundtrack was way too loud over the film, another lady said her ears hurt because of the music. I loved the 80s synth vibe. The other actors were great especially the man with the dog Moses, rather far fetched but wow what a ride!

I liked it a lot, it reminded me of screwball noir ish comedies, esp due to NYC connection to After Hours. I loved its pace, its high octane nature. It was surprisingly good for me as had thought it may be focused on ping pong - a run in the mill overcoming challenges in a sports context - get the most of your life etc borefest. TC was great as the narcissistic, problematic lead and thought GP was good too and I’m not usually a fan of hers. I’d say you come out feeling really in a high.

The man with the dog is director Abel Ferrera - driller killer fame known for his 80/90s films mainly. A NYC subculture staple.

But that’s ok isn’t it - to have an unlikeable lead? We don’t need to identify with them ? X

His amorality & hutzpah were the point, surely? You had to admire his front even as you cringed at what a horrible person he was. (And without revealing too much - Rachel was a good match!)

And casting that jerk off Shark Tank was inspired. No one could ever believe he was a good person, either.

It has made the guy from Shark Tank a bit of a star. I hate that.

Thewonderfuleveryday · 11/01/2026 16:52

MS is such a little shit isn't he. I didn't like him. TC does deserve some nominations for it, he played him brilliantly.

Amazing supporting cast too. Loved GP. Fun seeing Isaac Mizrahi in the theatre scene and Sandra Bernhard as his gran / aunt? Film needed 30 mins chopping off. Dog side quest was mental, but, frankly, it was his own fault for bullshitting and lying.
