Anyone else think that this looks like it could be a good film? Definitely showing my age here but looks just up my street ๐Ÿ˜„ Shame itโ€™s not out until November!

Saw the trailer for this tonight at the cinema. It will definitely be on my watch list.

LaBelleSauvage123 · 03/10/2025 21:41

Mine too! Looking forward to the reclining seats in our local cinema already.

squashyhat · 03/10/2025 22:00

Yep I'll be there. Love my local cinema โค

There was a 4 star review today in The Times.

Looking forward to this very much.

Yes saw this advertised before watching The Roses at the weekend, looks really good!

mum2jakie · 05/11/2025 22:38

Not my cup of tea but it's out in cinemas on Friday!

upinaballoon · 06/11/2025 12:06

My local cinema has it from tomorrow. The trailer looks promising. I'm aiming to go, if only to see all those dear faces again.

leporello · 06/11/2025 12:30

Dd's friend is in this! Going to see it at the weekend, looking forward to it.

Fishfungus · 08/11/2025 09:21

Waiting impatiently for update of anyone thatโ€™s seen it ๐Ÿ˜„

Iโ€™ve seen it.
It is quite arty, lots of music, Ralph Fiennes is magnificent.
It is very time appropriate for remembrance particularly at the very end and one scene in the middle with a returning soldier talking to young lads who have been called up.

Not a weepy, and not fun. A few humorous moments and lines, excellent cast.
Worth seeing - yes
Entertaining - not really
Thoughtful - yes
Music - lovely if you like soaring choral music.

Iโ€™d give it a 4/5.

Fishfungus · 08/11/2025 09:45

Thank you @Ilovemyshed for such an honest review - it sounds like it didnโ€™t disappoint!

I saw it today and loved it, I know the area well so enjoyed seeing it on screen. I thought it was funny, sad, uplifting, thought provoking and poignant. I liked the fact that it was very much show and not tell.

LaBelleSauvage123 · 09/11/2025 20:24

I saw it today too and loved it. The poignancy of what it was to be a young man, and an old man in 1916 was very well conveyed though the story and the music.

NewJobProblem · 09/11/2025 20:27

I saw the trailer and thought it looked wonderful, couldnโ€™t wait to watch it.
Saw it this weekend and thought it a huge disappointment, dull, too long, lacking emotion.

MrsKeats · 09/11/2025 21:28

Saw it today and really enjoyed it. Iโ€™m a big Alan Bennett fan though.

Rocknrollstar · 09/11/2025 22:10

Four of us went and we all loved it. It is vintage Alan Bennet. Fiennes and Roger Alum are superb. the music is wonderful and thereโ€™s plenty of it. Donโ€™t understand why any one would say it lacked emotion. It was very meaningful and captured the period beautifully.

Agreed. Especially the end.

MollyButton · 09/11/2025 22:20

I saw it today. It was perfect for me. I found it very emotional and the music was phenomenal.

rookiemere · 09/11/2025 22:36

I enjoyed it, but I didnโ€™t love it. Many of the performances were superb, but I felt it was slightly uneasy in terms of what it wanted to be, some of the themes were rather heavily handled and the female characters werenโ€™t well developed . I am not a huge Alan Bennett fan to be fair.

Cismyfatarse · 09/11/2025 22:51

Saw it today and really enjoyed it. There is a lot going on. Superb music and some very clever and poignant moments. AB plagiarises himself with one scene (it is also in Waiting for the Telegram) and it works better as a story told, rather than seen. Ralph Fiennes is superb.

Sherunswithwolves · 09/11/2025 22:52

I saw it on Friday. Most of it was beautifully done, some parts were incredibly poignant, but some parts were weak. The older actors were all excellent; the main young actor was too. Saltaire looked incredible. I'll look forward to seeing it again but that's because it was filmed in my local area and my relatives signed up in 1916 - it's something of a window into their world.

everyoldsock · 09/11/2025 23:04

Isnโ€™t there some colour blind casting here? From what Iโ€™ve seen in some pics. I think Iโ€™m going to wait until it comes on TV, as much as I admire RF.

I really donโ€™t think you can accuse it of that. There is only one non-white character, from a non-white family which seems quite realistic.

FastTurtle · 10/11/2025 15:14

I enjoyed it and the timing of itโ€™s release was perfect.
