As charming as the original animation and worth a watch. Shane they didn’t use the music that they had at the end of the animation.

Interesting! My lot have been ranting about it being the most pointless remake imaginable, because you just can’t do everything with people and CGI as you can in animation. “Let’s make it worse and cost more money”

Edited to add - they are massive fans of the books, films and TV series, and see this as just a cynical cash in. I shave had to listen to a lot of diatribes about this 🙄

Due to DD1, we were big fans of the books and then the original animations (including all the TV series!).

DD2 is going to see it this evening so will be passing judgment!

Saw it today. It was ok, kids enjoyed it. But definitely a poor imitation of the original film. It was way too dark, with the exception of Hiccup, Astrid & Fishlegs - the child actors were badly miscast - Ruff & Tuff were way too old!
And tbh the character of Toothless & the other dragons were just… soulless. Toothless was almost a background character.
I won’t be rewatching.

I absolutely loved it.

I went on Monday and quite enjoyed it, though didn't feel it really added anything much to the animated version. But it was a pleasant enough way to spend a rainy afternoon when I had nothing much else to do! I think remakes are always difficult- deviate too much from the original and you've spoiled it, stay to close and it's pointless. And a "live action" remake where quite a lot of the main characters have to be CGI does seem a bit daft. I did enjoy it, but if I could only see one version again it would be the animated one without doubt.

I enjoyed it.
There are bits that are better than the original film (e.g. Astrid is fleshed out more as a character).
There are some bits not a good or gave me "uncanny valley" vibes, because they tried to stick too closely to the animation in some cases.
Also, is it just me or did they butcher the sound track? The new one seems so empty compared to the original which was so rich and uplifting. It's like they chose to leave out half the instruments and it seems muted in comparison.

I loved the original end song and would I have loved to see something in that vein.

It was ok. Pretty much a carbon copy of the animated film so not really giving much extra. I enjoy seeing films at the cinema but this isn't one to rush out to see really. Looking forward to Superman next!

LadyFooFooFrankentits · 16/06/2025 22:14

The stand out feature was the scenery. The plot, actors and children mostly 'meh' for me.

scissy · 16/06/2025 23:34

I agree @LadyFooFooFrankentits - by the end I wanted our next holiday to be in rural NI 😂
Parts of the film did feel like an advert for the NI tourist board 🙂

blubberball · 26/07/2025 22:55

The original animated film is near perfect. I found this one a bit forgettable

StrangledHowl · 26/07/2025 23:03

It was fine, but you did wonder why, really. I kind of enjoyed Gerard Butler and Nick Frost, and Ruffnut and Tuffnut, but I was bothered by Hiccup’s eighties hair and Fishlegs being the evil elf from Christmas Chronicles 2, and every time Astrid was on screen I was just admiring her skin.
