Hi all

I've had a very hard few months since January (made redundant and a parent diagnosed with cancer as well as several other things) and am going on a sun holiday booked before any of that happened.

I'm on iPlayer and Netflix trying to download some films or series to watch that aren't depressing.

Can I have some recommendations please (also need a book for my kindle but will post in books!)

I like light hearted comedies or easy going series.

I like Death in Paradise, Beyond Paradise, any kind of murder mystery (doesn't have to be funny!), silly fun films like My Big Fat Greek Wedding and Murder Mystery (I did find Murder Mystery 2 on Netflix and am downloading it.)

I hate sci fi, end of the world type themes, and stand up comedy!

Any ideas please?

Have you seen BBCs ghosts (the U.K. version not the American one) they are very lighthearted and funny.

Wicked little letters
Enjoyed the Netflix series 'Nobody wants this'
Also Turkish series (Netflix) 'Another self' which makes you feel quite holiday-is as it's by the sea. It's 3 seasons. I watched in Turkish and learned a bit.

I'm enjoying "the residence" a series on Netflix- amusing murder mystery.

If you can cope with subtitles, Badehotellet is just enchanting. Good mood television set in a seaside hotel.

Anrom19 · 09/04/2025 15:40

I watched Find your Feet on film 4 last night , not sure where else you could watch it but was a great film .
Wishing you well

Lovelyview · 09/04/2025 15:46

The Mentalist and Candice Renoir are both fun murder mystery series.

CarpetKnees · 09/04/2025 16:46

Along similar lines to Ludwig, have a look for Patience, on Channel 4's catch up

PrincessOfPreschool · 09/04/2025 21:20

I watched 'The list' last night. It was really good - lighthearted but quite deep as rom coms go.

Hotdayinjuly · 09/04/2025 21:26

Taskmaster is one of my light hearted shows. It might stray into stand up for you though.

BlueRaincoat1 · 09/04/2025 21:30

Oh The residence on netflix is a great shout. It's a funny murder mystery series , I'm.on episode 4 and it's really fun.

Also Spy, the movie, is funny.

Keeping Mum.
Eddie the Eagle
A fish called Wanda
Calendar Girls
Hidden Figures
Big Fat Greek Wedding 2
As above pp, Finding your feet was lovely.

If you are interested in a series -
The Other One
The Windsors
Dinner Ladies (Victoria Wood) was a gentle comedy & available on YouTube.
The Detectives (Jasper Carrot) - daft police comedy.
Boomers (Netflix).
The Big Bang Theory
Young Sheldon

Can I suggest "The Durrells"? It was on ITV, now on NetFlix. It's based on that lovely book "My Family And Other Animals" by Gerald Durrell. All about his Mum and her bonkers children moving from wet and dismal Bournemouth to live in Corfu.

PrincessOfPreschool · 18/04/2025 13:03

'The life list' (film), not 'the list' as I called it above

Deuteragonist · 18/04/2025 16:12

+1 for Ludwig

cheapskatemum · 18/04/2025 16:44

Series: Detectorists & Ted Lasso
Films: Wonder & Pay it Forward

CarpetKnees · 18/04/2025 18:56

Anyone who enjoyed Ludwig (on iPlayer) would probably also enjoy Patience, which was on Channel 4.

idratherbedrawing · 18/04/2025 21:13

For films, two I enjoyed on Netflix recently were Moonrise Kingdom (Wes Anderson film from 2014) and Wicked Little Letters (fab period comedy with Olivia Coleman)

Deuteragonist · 22/04/2025 20:25

On NetFlix, The Elephant Whisperers.

Oh! Should have mentioned this sooner. Have you watched "The Repair Shop" series on iPlayer? Some might say - "Oh they are just mending old things", but when you see people's reaction, you realise they are mending people as well. We've often been in tears of joy, at seeing beautiful caring skills giving joy to people again.
