Please could you suggest anything you've loved.

Doesn't actually have to be happy or a comedy. A cosy watch would do as would a non-ARRGH type of thriller - something mentally engaging or challenging. Something good that is not going to be distressing.

No love/romance/happy ever after.
No horror or violence or anything aggitating.
Nothing with jump scares.
Nothing very slow or boring - so not like Potato Peel Society, that one about the seashanty men, or the one with the woman who opens a bookshop in the middle of nowhere.

For example things I've enjoyed that would fit what I'm looking for but I've already seen
Wine Country (group of women on a holiday to Napa Valley)
Red Notice (Ryan Reynolds)
Red One (Christmas film about santa being kidnapped)
Spy (Miranda Hart, Melissa - comedy spy film)
The Glass Onion (I know this does feature death but I was ok with this sort of thing - cosy murder type)

I hate this as I end up scrolling and scrolling and not picking anything so thought I'd ask for some help!

Old but good ones: Educating Rita (Julie Walters goes to uni), A Room with a View (bit of romance but mostly gentle comedy), Total Recall (Arnie action film, surprisingly good), Brassed Off/The Full Monty/Pride (although Pride does have some sad parts). Sending a hug.

Not a film but This Is US on 4od is lovely. Touches on some sad stuff but is hopeful at the same time.

I actually can't believe you've posted this. Are you crazy to recommend this to a grieving person? Fortunately I previously started to watch this before I was bereaved ages ago and stopped because I didn't like it - it started well but then became very traumatic and sad. I found that it upset me when I was fine. Thank god I know that this is not suitable for me now. The main theme of it certainly in the first couple of series is adult children dealing with the fall out of the death of their father.

This is emphatically not a a suitable watch for anyone in my boat so please ignore this if you are grieving too.

Anyway I was after films when I started this thread which was why I came back to suggest Mystery Island in case anyone else grieving is looking for lighter stuff.

Edited to add: thank you for taking the time to recommend something and apologies if this sounds too attacking but I am very anxious no one in my position tries to watch this if they are feeling very vulnerable and came to this thread looking for distraction as it would be too upseting IMO.

Edited

Apologies. I am grieving and have found/am finding it very helpful.
I guess we all do it differently.

It's really strange grieving. My mother died recently (we haven't got to funeral yet) and I find myself doing things like picking up an Easter egg for her then putting it back on the shelf when I remember.

@RuffRuffRuf just take care of yourself and I hope you have people around you. There's no right or wrong way 💞

The intern? There's a little bit of romance but it's not the main plot of the film. Nice combo of humour/a tiny bit of action/lots of feel good!

Exactly what came to my mind!

If you like Ryan Reynolds and have Disney+ Fall Guy is good and meets your criteria.

Fall Guy is good but doesn’t star Ryan Reynolds - it’s Ryan Gosling. Free Guy on the other hand does indeed star RR.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 06/03/2025 21:20

Nyad is good. Just a good story to get lost in.

Lol, I meant Free Guy but actually Fall Guy would meet the criteria here too!

God no, yes it's great but it's all about death.

Bank of Dave is great.

I also really enjoyed Greenbook which is a nice easy watch.

I don't think anything has ever made me cry as much as this is us. I frigging cried my heart out.

OK I must be the only one who thought the op was asking for things relating to loss that made it "make sense" rather than complete distraction and rip roaring comedy. Personally I cannot watch other people on screen laughing and being obviously funny when grieving, I want to try to adjust to my new reality but as I say we clearly all do this differently.

I did specifically say nothing distressing! Sorry for your loss and I know people grieve differently but watching that is the last thing I'd recommend for anyone grieving unless you want to make yourself feel much much worse.

There's no right way to grieve. It was just so different from what the op asked for. One of my old friends is very sensitive and actually stopped watching it after a season or two.

Hope you didn't feel attacked or anything, I'm definitely not that person. Just you do what you need to do love and watch what you feel is helpful. Grief is so complicated. ❤️. Take care of yourself
