Please could you suggest anything you've loved.

Doesn't actually have to be happy or a comedy. A cosy watch would do as would a non-ARRGH type of thriller - something mentally engaging or challenging. Something good that is not going to be distressing.

No love/romance/happy ever after.
No horror or violence or anything aggitating.
Nothing with jump scares.
Nothing very slow or boring - so not like Potato Peel Society, that one about the seashanty men, or the one with the woman who opens a bookshop in the middle of nowhere.

For example things I've enjoyed that would fit what I'm looking for but I've already seen
Wine Country (group of women on a holiday to Napa Valley)
Red Notice (Ryan Reynolds)
Red One (Christmas film about santa being kidnapped)
Spy (Miranda Hart, Melissa - comedy spy film)
The Glass Onion (I know this does feature death but I was ok with this sort of thing - cosy murder type)

I hate this as I end up scrolling and scrolling and not picking anything so thought I'd ask for some help!

Enola Holmes. Surprised me, but I really enjoyed it. Would also echo hidden figures too.

OVienna · 16/02/2025 21:26

Non fiction/documentary ok for you OP or no?

Number4PrivetDrive · 16/02/2025 21:47

In recent days, I've really enjoyed The Triple Six Eight and Wicked Little Letters, both on Netflix. The first is a WW2 film so it does feature some death, but there are some absolutely uplifting moments that highlight the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity. Plus, it is a true story from history that was overlooked for many decades. Jessie Buckley and Olivia Colman are superb in Wicked Little Letters, which is also based on a true story and libel case. Plus, you may find the swearing cathartic. Sincere condolences for your loss. Please look after yourself.

Death on the Nile (new version) is stunning and a great watch.

I really like The Martian, it's about hope as much as anything and not at all Sci fi.

Wicked letters is fun

So sorry for your loss, I hope you can find something distracting.

Wicked Little Letters on Netflix.

SUCH a good film. Some of the letters had me snorting with laughter.

FleaDog · 16/02/2025 21:59

The Martian is brilliant, not usual cup of tea but loved it

Labrynth - very old film but I think it is highlight of David Bowie's career😂

For sheer silliness try Phoenix Nights

Dumplin' is a brilliant feel.good film about growing up and confidence, it's a lovely watch

Not sure if this works for you (thinking along The Glass Onion route) but it's working for me for the "keeps mind engaged plot murder type, but generally not too gory", for similar need to escape as you -

Lewes - being the one after Morse, with Lewes as DI and James Hathaway as his bright young (but slightly tortured) DS . I never watched it first time round!

There are murders to be solved in each one, but some parts of the earlier series is about Lewes' wife who was killed before the series begins, just in case that could be an issue for you- but it's not full on and I've just found it good to watch as it's engaging enough in order to get away from it all... but not really grim.

Also like the DS Grace series - but quite a bit more grim details in some of the story lines.

Also recently Ludvig (but the DH is missing, possibly dead, so may not be a good choice), but beyond that it's more "cosy" crime thriller.

And enjoyed Patience - another murder detective one - but some of it is about coming to terms with loss of loved ones (over and above the murder victims).

CorsicaDreaming · 16/02/2025 22:18

Although it's a great film, I found a huge sense of loss and angst portrayed in The Martian - so not sure I'd watch it soon after a loss and when grieving myself, I think it might be a bit much.

Watched the whole of Motherland recently while going through a rough time. It was a great distraction. Also watched a whole series of Junior Bake Off - the kids were so lovely and funny, it's like prozac! Really helped cheer me up ☺️

Joy is quite good, re ivf
i enjoyed the Holdovers also
it is really hard to find films imo
a quick look on Netflix -
the Bank of Dave, first film is good, as is Wicked Little Letters
and i always enjoy The Day after Tomorrow and Paddington

EleanorReally · 17/02/2025 08:47

oh and Detectorists

Flyingwands · 17/02/2025 08:56

To Wong Foo thanks for everything Julie Newmar is a good watch.

the curious life of Benjamin Button is also good

the sound of music is my go to happy movie

Notgoodatpoetrybutgreatatlit · 17/02/2025 09:22

Galaxy Quest, oddly underrated awesome cast. I know it's a comedy satire on star trek/trad sci fi and therefore niche but it has Alan Rickman and Sigorny Weaver in it. When I was at a very low point I watched it and it really distracted me. As did Community. Also Carry on Up the Kyber. Obviously there are some highly questionable attitudes on display but some of the acting and comic timing is simply wonderful. And the critique of the British Empire is surprisingly modern, in that it would offend a Daily Mail reader even today.

have you seen Parasite?
currently on Netflix
i loved it

dumpydumpydumpdump · 17/02/2025 09:37

I watched antiques roadshow, it's on I player. And ghosts. There is a bit about loss and mourning in ghosts but I found it very helpful not triggering.

For a person in mourning though? That is excellent but not an easy watch.

OP - I loved Jewish Matchmakers on Netflix (the Indian one less so, but I know others who swear by it) and my go to when I'm feeling fragile is Downton Abbey - the series' and the movies. (I'm guessing you'll probably have seen Downton and that'll either work for you or it won't though.)

Can you stick Gossip Girl? Not necessarily happy, happy nor my usual thing but my DDs and I can get stuck in and it's nicely distracting.

I'd also recommend the following Oz series: Fisk, Sisters, Wellmania, the Let Down. Colin from Accounts is also good (I prefer the first series).

OVienna · 17/02/2025 12:33

I'm also a Motherland/Amandaland fanatic.

EleanorReally · 17/02/2025 12:43

@OVienna perhaps i am due a rewatch,
i can only remember the end!

EleanorReally · 17/02/2025 12:43

i agree Fisk is great

OVienna · 17/02/2025 13:22

There is a third series @EleanorReally but I don't think you can access it in the UK yet. I am so looking forward!

RuffRuffRuf · 17/02/2025 14:50

Thank you for your suggestions. I was really looking for a film rather than a tv series. In the end I watched Bandits because it was showing on Amazon prime as leaving soon. It was quite funny and not upsetting so was ok.

Some great suggestions here though.

Some of them I've seen like Knives Out, Parasite (saw it when it was released - not sure I'd watch that now tbh, its a bit too aggitating for me and although I thought it was a good film once was enough), Phoenix Nights.

This an ongoing interest - not stressy not violent not romantic films of distraction - so if anyone has any others please do let me know.
