I loved King Lear with Sir Anthony Hopkins and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations of their favourite Shakespeare adaptation films or versions of the plays available to watch on TV. I have watched Macbeth by Joel Coen but wasn't a fan.

I love Shakespeare's plays and wants to watch more of them at home.

National theatre at home has fabulous staged versions

I really like the Patrick Stewart Macbeth which leans into the horror of the witches a bit more than some
I also have a guilty pleasure of Mel Gibson's hamlet(!) mainly because I love Helena bonham Carter as Ophelia
Branagh or Joss Whedon's Much ado about nothing.

There's a very good Othello on NTAH with Tim McInnerny (spelling?) playing a marvellous Iago

Titus also with Anthony Hopkins
Hamlet (1964)
Throne of Blood (Macbeth)
Ran (King Lear)

A few gems not mentioned:

I like the Olivier version of Othello, but the DVD is hard to find and you can't stream it.

Over Christmas, I rewatched the Branagh directed Love's Labour's Lost which is really delightful and very underseen.

More recently, the 2011 version of Coriolanus was pretty good. Ralph Fiennes directed and starred in it.

Sorry if it has already been mentioned but there is an adorable version of A Midsummer Night's Dream on iplayer - the one with Matt Lucas as Bottom.

I adore Denzel Washington and subscribed to Apple TV principally to watch him in The Tragedy of Macbeth but probably prefer the Michael Fassbender version.

As PP have said, The Hollow Crown series are fabulous - especially Benedict Cumberbatch as Richard the Third.

If you can find it on NT Live at Home, Tom Hiddleston's Coriolanus is brilliant.

The Coriolanus film was the best I've seen. It's on iPlayer for a long while.

I'll check that out, thank you.
