I think it’s the sort of film I’d enjoy but at over 3 hours long I need someone whose seen it to recommend it!
and I’m not sure it’s DH’s cup of tea!

I've read the plot summary. Life's too short to watch it I think.
Sorry that's not v helpful Grin

2025ohdear · 26/01/2025 00:09

I was thinking of going to see it so any reviews would be helpful

Barkingupthewrongroof · 26/01/2025 00:42

I’ve decided that I’ll watch it when I can watch it at home. Cinemas are always freezing these days and for 3 hours I think I’d like home comforts and snacks that aren’t cinema priced.

Risheth · 26/01/2025 00:54

I generally like a long, gloomy film, but I’m not sure a three-hour film (with compulsory interval) about architecture, Holocaust trauma, anti-semitism, and heroin addiction is a good idea for a chilly January evening.

ThatMerryReader · 26/01/2025 02:21

Not another holocaust movie please...So utterly hackneyed now.
I am not wasting 3 hours of my life in another dull as a dishwasher movie about this theme.

I've seen you on other threads being nasty. You've got serious issues. Like, really serious.

NetZeroZealot · 26/01/2025 08:46

So no-one's seen it yet?!

It's on at our local Everyman so you can get drinks and snacks while watching (at a price). DH doesn't;t like 'dark' films so I might be going alone...

I think the sheer length of the film makes it that bit harder to plan around, @NetZeroZealot .

I'm going on Thursday, but that's the first day I've been able to finish work early and set the entire evening aside and I'm normally in for a new release within the first couple of days, although nothing has appealed to me much over the last couple of weeks.

Exactly this. Maybe in spring.

Twinstudy · 26/01/2025 12:22

I didn't realise it was 3 hours long! I'd suggested we go see it when it's on at our independent cinema but I hate overly long films. Might wait til I can watch at home when I can pause it for a wee 😂

I agree. Who has over 3 hours to sit in the cinema? The length of Wicked put me off too.

Fizbosshoes · 26/01/2025 12:30

Guy Pearce got my attention but I don't think I could deal with 3 hrs + at the cinema. (I read it was over 3 hrs but has a 15 min interval?) I needed a wee during a 2hr 15 film I saw yesterday. I think I will need to wait til it comes on TV and watch in 2 parts!
The annoying thing at yhe cinema is the programme starting at eg 7pm but then there's 25 min of trailers and waffle. Just tell me what time the actual film starts!

SocksAndTheCity · 26/01/2025 12:48

The time in the cinema doesn't bother me (I sat through a Godfather triple bill that was also an allnighter 😀) but considering I can pretty much do what I like with my time plus my local cinema is five minutes' walk away and I still found it hard to make time to see it, for people with prior commitments it's going to be a nightmare.

I also love a long gloomy film though @Risheth 😊

SocksAndTheCity · 26/01/2025 12:50

It's 215 minutes with a 15 minute interval as part of the film, I think @Fizbosshoes .

The Seven Samurai is 212 minutes and has the same, although the last time I saw it at the cinema the man sitting in front of me didn't come back after the break 😁

WorriedMutha · 26/01/2025 13:09

I loved Oppenheimer which was 3 hours long. The Brutalist is an 18 with prolonged scenes of sexual violence which is a no from me.

MissMarplesNiece · 26/01/2025 13:30

I saw a trailer for this at the cinema and was tempted until I saw how long it is. It's too long for me, even with a comfort break in the middle.

I've booked tickets to see Hard Truths, the new Mike Leigh film instead. At 1 hour 52 minutes that's much more my length of film.

Oh actually I did watch Opprnheimer and loved it. It didn't seem like 3 hours but still I think they could have cut 20 minutes out and it would have made no difference ( the Indian version cut out the sex scene with Florence Pugh where she reads out of the Hindu Holy book while naked. They probably saw a better film imo!)

sakura06 · 26/01/2025 14:36

I have low tolerance for films over 2 hours so there's no way I will see this at 3h 35m 🫣 The Times review headline described it as 'brutally boring'.

Yay! I wish someone would curate a Long, Gloomy film festival. I would buy a season ticket and a lot of pick’n mix.

Piggywaspushed · 26/01/2025 15:27

I thought Oppenheimer was an hour longer at least than I wanted it to be. I got to the spectacular explosion and made the mistake of looking at the time o my phone.

And a 3 1/4 hour film rated 18 sounds too much for me.

2025ohdear · 26/01/2025 17:28

So, in summary, no one has seen it?

HildegardVonBingham · 26/01/2025 17:33

@ThatMerryReader what a disgusting thing to say. Are you sick?

@NetZeroZealot I saw it last night and thought it was amazing - definitely worth seeing on the big screen, so well shot and beautiful. Didn’t expect to like it as I haven’t enjoyed the director’s other films. I would say it’s worth a trip to the cinema to see.

waltzingparrot · 26/01/2025 23:30

I saw it tonight. Ads started at 6.30, film finished at 10.40.

It's a difficult one to recommend. Imvho, it wasn't the brilliant masterpiece that some people are reviewing it as. I could have made lots of cuts and brought it in under 2.5 hours. There's some great music and cinematography though. I was never particularly bored, but think there's a lot of excess script.

If I had my time again, I'd watch it on TV.

There was only 5 people in our showing which doesn't bode well for opening weekend, although it's Sunday evening and it's blowing a hooley out there. Bizarrely, they chose to blast heat at the 5 of us tonight and I had to take my jumper off.

I'd also give the Oscar to Ralph Fiennes for Conclave over this.

TheaBrandt · 26/01/2025 23:36

We both thought it was brilliant. Definitely worth seeing at the cinema. We went to a posh one and had dinner watching it and a drink in the interval very nice evening.

TheaBrandt · 26/01/2025 23:38

There’s no “prolonged sexual violence” what are you on about?
